Second-hand advice: Yamaha TDM 900
The all-rounder from Yamaha as a used one

An unconventional mix of enduro and touring bike: The TDM didn’t want to fit into any drawer and created its own class. Can the all-rounder convince as a used one?

Jorg Lohse

Get on, start, drive off. Driving TDM can be so easy in Tester’s opinion. 1992 poses Yamaha the 850s on the wheels, almost a street offshoot of the desert-ready Super Tenere. BMW only came to Potte two years later with the genre-related four-valve GS. But the Japanese cannot really take advantage of the time advantage in the sales statistics. After all, around 14,500 copies of the TDM 850 will be sold. The much more mature successor model TDM 900, which has been on the market for ten years now, is still below the 5000 mark.

One wonders: where is the problem with the simple recipe? Certainly not at the price. All-rounders with a similar design sometimes cost 2,000 euros more in stores. The 900 series twin with its charismatic, but technically meaningless 270-degree crank pin offset was not found to have any real weaknesses either in the top test or in comparison tests. On the other hand, however, there is no euphoric jubilation. The bottom line is that the Yamaha presents itself as a highly functional vehicle that can be moved smoothly over country roads and long distances. That is content with four liters per 100 kilometers at a moderate pace and thus makes huge non-stop trips of over 450 kilometers possible. With its first-class braking system – the pliers come from the parts shelf for the R1 super sports car – it delivers brilliant deceleration values; from 2005 it is even equipped with ABS as standard (recognizable by the model designation TDM 900 A). But you have to accept the conspicuously passive sitting posture with which more active drivers find it difficult to get used to, withstand the harsh load changes or digest the sometimes insensitive response behavior of the spring elements, which were conspicuously underdamped in the first generation (until 2004).

The instrumentation is fully equipped and scores with good readability. The models from 2005 onwards have an ABS warning lamp.

sightseeing
Technically fit, solidly made, well cared for: The TDM 900 is considered problem-free in the used trade – free of pitfalls or nasty surprises. The engine is a steadfast endurance runner. First or second hand offers with 50,000 kilometers on the clock are not uncommon for the Twin. The often criticized load changes are intensified by shock absorbers in the rear wheel that wear out relatively early. The test drive clarifies whether there is a need for action. Second check: With the brake pads on lightly, check whether the front brake discs are warped. In 2006, in addition to the TDM 900, other Yamaha models also had to replace defective throttle sensors on a large scale. Since some dealers refer to this as a “communication fiasco” at Yamaha, this point should definitely be clarified during the sales pitch. Rust should not be an issue with the generally cleanly processed TDM.

Market situation
Those interested in second-hand vehicles have to get used to the fact that the number of TDM 900 units is fairly manageable despite its now long construction period of ten years. In addition to the correspondingly low supply, however, there is a significantly higher demand. Young used vehicles (from year of construction 2008) around 5000 euros are particularly in demand. The first generation of the Yamaha twin is available on the usual used trade exchanges on the Internet from around 2500 euros. A special plus: Many machines are already extensively equipped for travel fans – be it with heated grips or case systems. For the TDM with ABS brakes, around 4,000 euros have to be invested. The new TDM is currently being offered for 9995 euros: This means that the prices for demonstrators, daily permits and annual machines will come under significant pressure again.
