This is not least due to its handiness, which the Yamaha Y-Max owes not least to its chassis that it has largely borrowed from the smaller models of the X-Max series.

Yamaha is writing a real success story with its Maxen. No other large scooter sells as well as the sporty luxury liner TMax 530, although it costs more than 11,000 euros. The 125 and 250 from the X-Max series are also at the top of the European registration statistics. No wonder that Yamaha continues to mobilize in this direction: The Yamaha X-Max 400 is now replacing the aging Majesty.

New Yamaha scooter

At the international press launch in Milan, the Yamaha X-Max 400 proved that every centimeter counts when the traffic light starts in the hustle and bustle of traffic in the northern Italian city, and the scooter implements the command from the throttle so promptly that it gives its driver decisive advantages; Yamaha states the acceleration from zero to 40 km / h with 2.2 seconds. Pulling away from the panting car driver so quickly calms the nerves immensely.

Yamaha X-Max 400 scores with a large storage compartment

Yamaha

Yamaha X-Max 400.

Because the chassis largely comes from the smaller models, the Yamaha X-Max 400 is agile despite its mighty appearance and dances casually between standing columns. The 15-inch wheel at the front and the 13-inch rear wheel also allow abrupt changes of direction. The enormous storage space under the bench seat, which has increased by ten percent compared to the 250 and is now 37 liters, is most welcome on the shopping tour. There are also two glove compartments in the panel, one of which is lockable, for a cell phone, wallet and other odds and ends.

But that’s not supposed to be it yet. Because the Yamaha X-Max 400 can still achieve a top speed of 150 km / h, it can also frolic on the country road at the gates of Milan and start a trip to the glamorous Lake Como – a German quarry pond does it too. The upright seating position allows good control and provides just as much security as the large, wide tires. When overtaking, the engine is lively again, the Yamaha specification of 4.8 seconds when pulling from 50 to 90 km / h seems credible. The brake system with two generously dimensioned discs at the front and one at the rear is easy to dose and has excellent deceleration. At the moment, however, you have to do without ABS; then the price increases by around 500 euros.

The cockpit like in a car

Yamaha

The cockpit of the X-Max 400 was deliberately designed in the style of a passenger car.

If you tighten the pace in the winding curve, there are clear differences to the sporty TMax, not to mention its additional 16 hp. The two suspension struts of the Yamaha X-Max 400, in particular, are not very good at driving quickly on uneven asphalt and cause unrest in the chassis, and the main stand touches down early when it is inclined.

Nevertheless, the Yamaha X-Max 400 is a success, because it closes the gap between the 250 and the flagship better than the Majesty. The processing quality is of a high level, and the scooter doesn’t even have to do without a personal touch: Yamaha has 21 smooth accessories in its range, from the sharp Akrapovic exhaust for sports riders to heated grips and smartphone holders to the top case for weekend tours.
