Two worlds
Online man Manuel Fuchs is a declared fan of the MOTORRAD endurance test Sportster. Last weekend, however, fate in the person of the fleet manager slipped a Yamaha XT 1200 ZE Super Tenere on him. Here are his unsorted thoughts.

The Sportster has to leave for a moment to get cigarettes. And I am allowed to Yamaha XT 1200 ZE Super Tenere, which is still in the underground car park after the production of the concept comparison two-cylinder tourer for MOTORRAD 21/2017.
Killer insight and big surprise: the Yamaha XT 1200 ZE Super Tenere is the better motorcycle in almost every single discipline compared to the 1200 Sportster; in the overall picture anyway.
Smooth, powerful engine, stable chassis, reliable brakes, great ride comfort, decent weather protection, extensive helper electronics and the overall equipment – there are not only a handful of worlds between the Yamaha XT 1200 ZE Super Tenere and the Harley, in between there is a Jasper-Fforde-dimensional – Stephen King’s Dark Tower Library.
Well, the Sportster doesn’t set the bar very high either – it’s an experience of its own. The Yamaha XT 1200 ZE Super Tenere, on the other hand, drives largely uneventful and inspires the driver to look for his experiences – anywhere, regardless of the distance.
What can the Yamaha XT 1200 ZE Super Tenere not do so well??
Has anyone just stumbled across that and is now wondering in which disciplines the jarring US iron is better than the Yamaha XT 1200 ZE Super Tenere?
- In the discipline “Which function of the on-board menu do I use to switch off the heated grips??” the Sportster wins because it has neither an on-board menu nor heated grips.
- In the discipline “Where can I find the mileage for the logbook?” the Sportster wins because it simply displays it when you ask, even without the ignition.
- In the discipline “Can the fat fox balance its buttocks elegantly on the saddle?” the Sportster wins with a significantly lower seating position. (The electronically adjustable spring elements of the Yamaha XT 1200 ZE Super Tenere give away the chance to score points as the first chassis of a production motorcycle with an easy-entry function for short-legged people.)
Despite the undisputed superiority of the Yamaha XT 1200 ZE Super Tenere, I’m looking forward to riding the Sportster again soon. Even if your tires feel like sunscreen on wet granite in the rain.
But the seeds are sown. Perhaps the home garage should not only have a cruiser for the free weekends. Perhaps you should park an unpretentious, comfortable and easy-care route eater next to it for the somewhat longer, main-relaxed-arriving tasks. One could consider that ideology-free within the scope of the financial and spatial possibilities … and of course read what colleague Schmieder has to say on the topic in MOTORRAD 21/2017 (published on September 29).
