The good thing was that the extremely low weight of the machine and the clearly reporting chassis gave me the opportunity to handle the slightly wedged rear end with ease. No risk of falling.” – but after twenty minutes Zonko was still done.

I wanted to take off my helmet again and pull the whistle in the interests of wasting time, but Gustl, who, as a driver coach in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup, naturally recognizes all of the drivers’ movements, did not let that go. Get on, push, drive! Racing circuit. So first course upstairs, all others downstairs. But there was one thing I still had to know: “What if I switch myself once, that is, when I pull up when I accelerate fully instead of pushing down, is the engine over?”

No problem, says Gustl, the boys sometimes passively over-rev the engine. That wouldn’t be a big problem for the Husqvarna off-road two-stroke. Husqvarna? No KTM engine? There was a chance to take my helmet off again, and I took it. The Red Bull machine wasn’t a KTM at all?

You learn precise driving on a two-stroke

In the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup, KTM Moto3 machines are used, but Metrakits are used to screen the talents, i.e. for the three-day selection process that takes place once a year to determine who is allowed to take part in the Cup and who is not. These are originally Spanish racing motorcycles (the company has since been sold to Italy) with Paioli dampers and an “old” 125 cc two-stroke engine from Husqvarna. 34 hp, 210 km / h. The low-vibration engine due to a balancer shaft, which has nothing to do with the BMW and KTM era from Husqvarna, was simply bought in and adapted for road racing (with blocked exhaust control and uniformly machined cylinders to ensure equal opportunities). The Metrakits were used in the pre-GP series, which is still used today as part of the Spanish championship, but now with 250 cc four-stroke engines.

“The Metrakits are ideal for spotting the talents. These are real racing machines, but they don’t cost an avalanche and are very easy to maintain. And when you deal with a two-stroke engine that doesn’t march at all below and then really, much better above, you can see whether one is made for racing or not, ”explains Gustl, whom I had perfectly involved in a conversation and thus distracted . The ex-racing driver doesn’t think much of using a relatively inexpensive, throttled four-stroke engine, for example in the ADAC Junior Cup (KTM 390): “You keep hearing the thought that two-stroke driving doesn’t make much sense because in the world championship only four-stroke engines stand at the start, but that’s a big mistake. Because such a throttled four-stroke engine always has power and torque and can also accelerate out of a curve in too high a gear, with a two-stroke engine you will die terribly. You can feel instantly that you made a mistake. Precise driving, which is essential in the World Championship, since the sharp four-stroke racing engines only work competitively in a certain, very narrow window, can be learned much better and more cheaply with a two-stroke engine. And as I said, you can also judge how good a driver is much better when he attacks on a sharp two-stroke. So finally put your helmet on! ”

Red Bull Rookies Cup or Spanish Championship

Due to blocked exhaust controls and uniformly processed cylinders, there is equal opportunity even with the large number of motorcycles.

Every year, an average of 120 young talents between the ages of 13 and 16 from all over the world come to the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup viewing competition. This sighting will be driven on a Spanish racetrack at the end of the season. On the first day 60, on the second day the other 60, and on the third day the twelve best drivers take part in the final elimination. Ultimately, twelve youngsters prevailed, who then compete with the twelve pilots who have already contested one season in the Rookies Cup and are allowed to stay another, on seven race weekends in front of an unbelievable crowd as part of the MotoGP. Money doesn’t matter. The rookie only has to pay for the arrival and departure and the overnight stay. Everything else is done by Red Bull and its partners (KTM, Alpinestars, Ipone). A dream! Gustl: “We want to find the best talent, and it doesn’t matter how much money the dad has.”

The Rookies Cup is one of the top two ways into the World Cup. The other is the Spanish championship, which has meanwhile been upgraded to the Junior World Championship. It is driven at the highest level, with some 1: 1 World Championship machines. However, it costs a small fortune. Nothing works there under an annual budget of 80,000 euros, you won’t be able to win under 200,000 euros. It’s a drama. Actually amazing. For a speed hero like Gustl Auinger, who in the 80s as a “penniless” private driver was able to achieve five GP victories in the 125cc class and 18 podium finishes and was third in the final ranking of the World Cup in 1985, the budget for the Spanish championship would be one been an insurmountable hurdle. On the other hand, it has to be said that Gustl, who focused all his activities and all his energy on racing, left no stone unturned in finding sponsors and also achieved a great deal in this area thanks to his unconditional tenacity and unbridled passion – even if he did constantly stood on the financial precipice.

With a proudly swollen chest into the mental catastrophe

Driver coach Auinger is really challenged for the first time when the twelve “chosen ones” meet the twelve “experienced” rookies in the pre-season test. “They come with great self-confidence because they burned down over a hundred competitors in the tough elimination,” explains Gustl, “and assume that they will immediately make it into at least the top ten. Anything else is unthinkable for them. The reality then looks different. You end up in the defeated field. Then they no longer understand the world and fall into a hole from which they have to be helped. In this phase it is very important to show them that there are always clear causes that have to be found and that real racing is only now beginning. It’s about finding the last second or two. And nothing goes quite easily from the wrist anymore. They have to understand that. “

One problem is that the racing motorcycle in the Cup is no longer a 65-kilo Metrakit, but a 250cc four-stroke Moto3 KTM that must weigh at least 140 kilos together with the driver. A 45-kilo driver is given a lot of ballast. The twelve “experienced” rookies already have a year of experience with this very package. You can’t just make up for that with full commitment and unconditional fighting spirit. Gustl: “I tell you to look at the machine like a friend. The friend should help you, but he can only do that if you understand him and clearly show him what he should do for you. ”

Before the brakes are completely free, accelerate

Similar to a two-stroke engine, the rookie KTM Moto3 has a narrow rev range in which it delivers its power, and also a relentlessly intervening limiter at 13,000 rpm. Therefore, the timing from the entrance to the corner has to be perfect. To make matters worse, the KTM A special driving style is required because you cannot find the right suspension setting for the roll phase. The machine doesn’t like braking hard, releasing the armature degressively to the full incline, rolling briefly and – as soon as you can breathe again – accelerating. Without a pull, the KTM is either nervous and restless in the back or in the front (depending on the set-up). This is the correct way to drive it: brake hard, release degressively and before the brake is completely free, accelerate.

Therefore, looking for braking points as late as possible makes little sense. You have to look for the ideal vertex and determine the entrance and exit from there. Gustl: “Of course you can see immediate success if you brake three meters later than the man in front, but you will lose a lot more at the exit because the timing is simply not right. You have to see that. If we manage to get the rookie so far that he understands the strengths and weaknesses of the machine and that he develops a clear feeling for the direction in which the chassis has to be tuned, then he can become a winning driver. But not the first time you face the old hands. If you want to find the last second, you shouldn’t see the machine as something with two wheels and a motor. ”So the rookies also have to learn to feel the machine and to describe the impressions on the track in such a way that they become the mechanic can understand. Because: winning is always teamwork.

I didn’t have a chance anymore, I had to hit the track

First up, shift up down, sharp two-stroke, Dunlop 900 GP profile tires, 65 kilos, 210 km / h, 320 mm single-disc four-piston anchor, Paioli chassis. A quick push from Gustl, engage, and the 34 hp Metrakit with the bull logo comes to life. At 6000 rpm I experience something like a torque boost that I would not have expected there, then the single-cylinder pulls relatively linearly through to 10,000 rpm, where it increases again strongly and does not decrease until 12,500. It gets weaker further up. So it was clear where the music was playing.

Of course you could expect someone who has already fired a 350 hp turbo Hayabusa and knows the range beyond 300 km / h to attack in a completely cool way on a 125 cc.

but it was not like that.

Yes, heaven, spreading out is out of the question!

I found an astonishingly comfortable seating position relatively quickly and was happy about the very good feedback front and rear, but the grip in the infield of the ring in Spielberg was a challenge as soon as I put the gas on at the top. Maybe I was over-motivated because the handling was so seductively easy and precise and I wanted to show the Gustl my full potential. In any case, I had a terrible slide when I opened the tap in an inclined position after releasing the brake and a short rolling phase. Yes, heaven, spreading it out in front of Master’s eyes was really out of the question! In Gustl’s 16-year racing career there were stars en masse because the engine stuck, the tire grip fluttered, the asphalt simply ran out or the brakes overheated, but I definitely didn’t want to lie down now.

The good thing was that the extremely low weight of the machine and the clearly reporting chassis gave me the opportunity to handle the slightly wedged rear end with ease. No risk of falling. But after twenty minutes I was exhausted. Since I’ve actually always driven the largest possible displacement machines in my life, the necessary precision on the Metrakit required a lot of concentration. But I got an idea how great it has to be when you have hit the Metrakit and set up superbikes on the amateur racetracks. I will never forget how Bradl Stefan and Ranseder Michi rode the 125cc two-stroke KTM at the Pannoniaring at 1.59 minutes – a shock for everyone there. The local hobby racers with the most expensive superbikes hardly came under 2.05. The three who made it to 2.02 were real heroes – until the two boys appeared.

“The boys would slam you in the back in rows”

The fact that entry into the extremely fast World Cup is still possible today without having to sacrifice a single-family home for a single season is simply world class. The great idea for the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup came from Thomas uberall and Harald Bartol. In 2016, the cup will be held for the tenth time. Gustl Auinger has been there as a driver coach from the start. How does he see his job there? “The boys can all drive very well, so they don’t need a lot of help,” he says, “but as a racing driver you sometimes fall into a hole or get bogged down in something when things don’t go according to plan. I’ve seen this myself many times in my career. Unfortunately, at the time I had no one to straighten my head and direct my gaze to a solution. Sometimes I was really perplexed and helpless. I can spare the boys that. ”When asked about the sometimes very harsh driving style in racing, he said:“ If the driving here is too brutal, I let all 24 line up and say that they are all my friends. So you don’t come across a depersonalized iron pile out on the track, but someone I really like. You can see that. “

For the sake of completeness, it should be mentioned here that the Gustl thoroughly appreciated my dedicated trip on the Metrakit, but did not give rise to any false hopes: “I’m sorry, Zonko. Not only are you way too old, but you are also way too slow. The boys would bang you in the rear in rows. “
