BMW R nineT

Aesthetic enjoyment, disdainful zeitgeist or skepticism about water boxing? Whatever the case, the BMW R nineT is at the top of the readers’ list of the most desirable BMWs that offers traditional basic motorcycle virtues instead of full technological supply.

The fact that in the illustrious round of highly decorated BMW competitors, of all things, the youngest motorcycle outclasses the competition in such a way is somewhat surprising. After all, the BMW R. nineT even beat the Bavarian model boxer and king of numbers, the current BMW R 1200 GS, out of the field. Well-known four-cylinder engines such as the S 1000 RR (debuted in 2010) and the K 1200 S from 2004 also fell by the wayside.

Video about the BMW R nineT

That’s a good thing, because the run on the neo-classic, which is by no means cheap at over 15,000 euros, continues unabated. Currently (as of April), the BMW R nineT is back in fifth place on the approval charts, with over 1000 units sold this year. And that, although the next offshoot of the model series is already in the starting blocks with the BMW R nineT Scrambler. You don’t have to be a prophet to predict a successful career for her too. But what is the secret of success?

To put it philosophically: It is her absolutely accurate interpretation of the prevailing zeitgeist. In short: the right boxer at the right time. Based on the fortunate circumstance that BMW stuck to this engine concept for decades with loyalty to the Nibelung. Because one thing is clear: without the air-cooled boxer there could be no BMW R nineT. And without the R nineT in return, you wouldn’t have the absolute certainty that you don’t need 125 hp and water cooling to be happy. In any case, that’s the first thought that comes to mind when the 1200 comes out of the rev range with a full punch and then pushes through the rev range with relish. What can the water boxer do better, you ask yourself involuntarily? What more do you want? And who needs that?

Runs confidently straight ahead, calmly bounces

No, the old engine fits into the R nineT concept like the aluminum rump on the rear frame. You could even say: This is where he experiences his climax, the culmination of his career. Because there has never been a motorcycle that was better tailored to its cylinders. Exactly the opposite of "an unfortunate accumulation of raw materials", as a former colleague once said about a far less harmonious motorcycle. Seen in this way, a lot of luck was undoubtedly involved with the BMW R nineT. It is said that there were people who, after sitting up, were so delighted that they forgot to drive off. They missed the best.

The fact that the R nineT keeps what it promises while driving. This is not just due to the engine. It’s down to the authenticity with which she approaches her everyday life as a commercial vehicle. She doesn’t bother, she just pretends. She gives in predictably, but not nervously. It completes radii precisely, runs confidently in a straight line, bounces calmly and cushions smoothly, brakes to the point and prevents locking wheels in a very contemporary way. The BMW R nineT can do what a naked bike, a roadster, a modern classic – whatever you want to call it – what a motorcycle should be able to do. Even in everyday life, when it’s not the show that counts, but the go.

The show, the big performance – it can do that too, no question about it. She is happy to show her aluminum tank, the lovely flanks, and would like to tell everyone that they go to Italy to brush them before they are painted in Germany. Mudguard holder made of aluminum, the handwheel of the hydraulic spring preload as well, a BMW emblem in the front of the headlight, the rich, dull sound from the flap-controlled exhaust system with the two well-shaped bags, the spoked wheels with the fat 320 mm brake discs, the radial brembos, the intake manifolds, which still open into the cylinders at the back, and the manifolds, which are flanged with a bold swing right at the front in the airstream and not at the bottom …
Stop stop Otherwise it will be unfair. Of course, the new engine has its right to exist. But here, in the BMW R nineT, the old boxer is simply the better choice. And the R nineT election winners. Point.
