Charming Cafe-Roadster

NineT, or 90, the anniversary number of the Bavarian brand this year. And since you are never as well served as by yourself, BMW is celebrated through an emblematic roadster of its production.

A nod to BMW’s stylistic and technological heritage, the R nineT is a synthesis and symbol of Bavarian genetics in terms of roadster; even in terms of motorcycles in general. If this process had already been used for the R 1150 R and R 1200 R in the “Classic” version, the point here is quite different. It is indeed a separate machine, with so-called "Manufacture" finishes.

Baptized

A hard and above all pure roadster (leitmotif of the concept), the machine rides the currently powerful wave of cafe racer personalized, one of the major arguments of this machine. Indeed, it is dedicated, in part, to preparations and is designed to re-invent itself according to the desires, or talents, of its owner. In fact, BMW called on four big names in tuning, such as Roland Sands and Blitz Motorcycle, to demonstrate the quality of its product. Like these, BMW kept the essential elements and codes for its anniversary machine, a modern tribute to the very first BMW R 32 motorcycle, from 1923: flat twin engine air / oil version, spoked rims, inverted fork without Telever, chassis and specific parts…

BMW R NineT

However, novelty does not make technological concessions to vintage. Or almost. Because to come true, the concept mixes genres and eras both in composing and in style.

Discovery

The neo-retro spirit blew hard on the R nineT, with good luck. The concept is thus summed up in a few words: purity, authenticity, simplicity and emotion and celebrates, while seductive, the spirit of the German brand. Without forgetting the technology. From the outset, in its dark livery enhanced with silver tone and metallic, the machine speaks to the heart, dressing in an essential worked in detail. Interesting paradox which is the strength of any model of the genre. Thus, its contrasting reservoir alone concentrates this idea. Stretching very classic lines, long, slightly curved, with marked shoulders, its curves magnetize the retinas. Painted in black, only its striated sides, brushed by hand and varnished, reveal the aluminum which constitutes it. Two central ribs run along its length, framing a cap unfortunately a little too common.

BMW R NineT

Extending this almost flat spine, the pilot saddle, topstitched with white thread, seems to rest on two side plates with mesh openings and adorned with ornate screw covers. In fact, the passenger seat benefits from a dedicated and completely removable structure. One of the machine’s customization elements is the frame, consisting of four tubular steel trellises specially developed for the nineT. It incorporates the flat twin as a load-bearing element and allows you to remove, act 1, the support of the accompanying person (by removing 8 screws), then to place a cover on this seat. Thus released, the roadster further lightens its lines. To go further in selfishness and stripped down style, let’s move on to act 2: remove the end of the frame with license plate holder and rear light, passenger seat, but also the plate, light and indicators (not approved)….

BMW R NineT

The two main parts of the chassis support one, the steering gear, and the other the essential twin-cylinder in its ultimate "front" version, cooled by air and oil. We therefore find this flat-twin in black finish and anthracite magnesium rocker covers. Each of these cylinder heads houses two chain driven overhead camshafts. They actuate the valves via ultra-light latches, suitable for high speeds. The Bavarian block of 1170 cm³, delivers 81 kW (110 hp) at 7,750 rpm and develops maximum torque of 11.9 da.Nm at 6,000 rpm. Identical to that of the R 1200 R, its final transmission is however shortened to favor acceleration and engine character..

BMW R NineT

And to reinforce this trait, the vocalizations of the R nineT have been treated. The breath of the twin rushes into an Akrapovic exhaust line, housed on the left side, comprising two superimposed silencer in satin stainless steel. An acoustic shutter controlled by an electric servomotor further optimizes the sound with each variation of speed. Finally, customization requires, we can place the exhaust in the low or high position thanks to a suitable fitting, thus accentuating either a Cafe Racer style or rather Scrambler.

BMW R NineT exhaust

Also note the right side air intake dressed in an aesthetic cover, signed with the name of the machine.

This constant aesthetic research brings another surprise to the remarkable front axle: a large diameter inverted fork (46 mm and 120 mm of travel), gold anodized, borrowed from the hyper-sporty S 1000 RR (!) But devoid of adjustment. , replaces the Telelever usually fitted to boxer models. No heresy in this choice but the desire to stick as closely as possible to stylish Cafe Racer standards. And how ! The steering column mimics the brand’s past productions, displaying its identification plate. The direction indicators (optional LEDs) are placed in the lower position at the radiator level. Attached to the lower tee, the round optic circled in silver integrates the BMW emblem on the bulb cover in its center and dominates a mudguard attached to the tubes by two powerful aluminum plates. Attractive.

Boxer: air / oil cooled flat twin

More traditional at the German manufacturer, the transmission by shaft and cardan takes place in the single-sided arm placed on the right side. Its movements are managed, over 120 mm, by a combined shock absorber painted white, adjustable in preload via a forged aluminum wheel and in rebound by a screw located at the base of the element. The bevel gear housing has three attachment points on which it is possible to attach, for example, a license plate holder or the lighting device in the lateral position (according to approval).

Paralever BMW R NineT suspensions

Two pneumatic mounts equip our test mounts: Metzeler Z8 interact and Continental Road Attack 2 CR. They wrap 5.5 "light alloy spoked rims, flat seat and black aluminum hubs. These models are tubed, limiting tire choice. Tangential spoked wheels would have avoided this detail but can be strained on styling. An optional 6 "rear rim is available.
Their rotation is stopped, at the front, by a pair of radial calipers, four pistons biting 320 mm discs. The opposing, two-piston retarder clamps a 265mm single disc. The whole is under the control of an ABS delivered as standard.

BMW R NineT headlight

Finally, note that the harnesses of the engine wiring and other motorcycle peripherals are separated to allow further technical transformations and further optimize its look. Headlights or indicators, for example, thus accept the installation of alternative electrical components.

In the saddle

Narrow and with only 785 mm of seat height, the R nineT is welcoming for many riders. The most demanding will opt, as an option, for a low seat of 775 mm. Placed in the axis of the legs, the footrests could however prove to be awkward for some. Those of the accompanying person rest on plates welded to the rear frame. Although made of steel (less expensive to repair), it would be better to avoid the fall…. or remove, as explained this unsightly element, of fairly basic invoice. Thus arranged, the end of the frame, removable) only supports 8 kilos…. or a light baggage.

In the driving position, the 18-liter tank fits naturally and the seating comfort is BMW standard. Leg flexion is still limited and the back barely bends to grip the wide, almost straight handlebars, attached to an aluminum top yoke via strong saddles of the same metal.

Taking the design of that of the R 1200 R, two analog counters frame a monochrome screen circled in silver. The latter displays the time, gear engaged, indicator of passage in reserve with mileage count and two partials each indicating speed and average / instantaneous consumption. A button on the left stalk allows you to choose the desired information. The owner’s turn is quickly done. The reduced electronic presence is not accidental, the manufacturer wishing to leave more room for piloting, without too much technological interference. However, there is already more than is needed.

BMW R NineT

In the city

Masculine, hectic, ample and stylish, the R nineT’s ramage is in total harmony with its plumage. The double exhaust creaks with each gas stroke…. an auditory delight. The BMW also dances, slightly, from left to right, overturning torque requires.
However, the roadster retains its Germanic savoir vivre. The controls are smooth, precise and the box locks perfectly. Enough to calmly appreciate the first developments in urban areas and re-discover flat air / oil. Sublimated by its fierce melody, invigorated by its shortened transmission reduction, the flat twin seems to take on a new dimension. Each start becomes a pretext for a strong start, both in terms of mechanics and sound. But its flexibility is also appreciated, picking up on a trickle of gas in sixth at 1,500 revolutions / minute.
And then there is the balance of the machine, its ease of being taken. Despite its apparent bare bones, the nineT still weighs 220 kg ready to go. But its geometry, smaller than that of the R 1200 R – wheelbase of 1476 millimeters (- 19 mm) and hunting of 102.5 millimeters (-17.4 mm) – improves its liveliness. We will still avoid saturated city centers where their wide arch could interfere with maneuvering between vehicles..

If the beauty is made to shine on the terraces, it is just as much to stand out on the less mundane asphalt..

Motorway and expressways

Screw on the handle and listen. Vociferous when accelerating, metallic at high speed, the German quickly settles on the legal motorway, offering acceptable protection at this speed and up to 150 km.h. Comfort and high-performance damping, however, make it possible to appreciate the foray into the priced asphalt. Beyond, we hang on to the handlebars, we hide our nose behind the meters and we take advantage of the extension of the twin, to exceed, without difficulty, the 220 km / h. After this peak, the regulation speed is found almost happily, making his heart purr at 5,200 laps. At this speed, the nineT relaunched vigorously on the last report, just to pass the time more quickly and leave these spaces where neither pilot nor machine can stand out..

BMW R NineT

Departmental

The character of the Bavarian Cafe-Roadster is fully expressed on the tormented secondary network of southern Spain. Whatever the rhythm, the charm of flat air / oil is expressed on an intoxicating soundtrack. In a left turn, the exhausts grazing the asphalt, the rumbling is naturally amplified, the pleasure too. The boiler claims a slightly rougher behavior than its "liquid" successor. It perfectly justifies its use in a machine of this type, where its air / oil cooling mechanics are preferred. Loaded with torque, flat can be enjoyed at all speeds and in all gears. No need for a more powerful engine, its 110 hp (107 France) and almost 12 da.Nm of torque already place it in the high performance range of the segment..

BMW R NineT

Catapult of charm, the nineT is a pleasure to take, to relaunch in sunk, fast or more relaxed piloting. Intuitive, she lets her pilot enjoy the trip on board. Rigid, tilting briskly from one angle to another, the Munichoise provides first-rate dynamic behavior, served by great precision. Optimized by the large lever arm of the wide handlebar, the angle grip is natural, well served by the envelopes retained. My model was wearing the Z8s, whose round profile perfectly matches the jovial character of the roadster. Their flawless grip was not enough to overcome the excellent and surprising ground clearance of the "R 90". In large curves and at high speed, the course is flawless, just like in rapid sequences.

BMW R NineT

Although adjusted for a comfortable feel, adapted to the philosophy of the nineT, the suspensions work in harmony on all occasions, as long as the coating is of quality and the handling is smooth. The bitumen defects are then flown over. There is hardly that by pushing the machine in its entrenchments on bumpy course, that the equipment will then admit a hydraulic little braked and a shock absorber a little slow, but without never breaking up..
Only taking the front brakes could surprise a less experienced pilot. On reflex braking, the calipers attack is immediate, fortunately curbed by the ABS. Good point, the steering does not lock when braking in a curve and the rear element provides optimal guidance. Finally, it is always strange to feel a slight dive on a BMW whose Telever usually ensures the absence of this phenomenon..

BMW R NineT rear view

Part-cycle

Rigid trellis frame, carrier motor, oversized fork, paralever and steering damper…. everything contributes to first-class behavior. In fact, the nineT is easy to drive, to handle. Even when the pace picks up, it provides a reassuring feeling of control.

BMW R NineT

Braking

Powerful, almost too much if you are careful, the front calipers provide muscular decelerations. A little dexterity will ensure an operation without anguish and without reproach. If the rear clamp quickly triggers the ABS when the front axle settles, it nevertheless complements the opposing retarders well..

Comfort / Duo

Suspensions like upholstery confer a very good quality of comfort, erasing most of the defects of the road networks. Big compressions, however, are felt more sharply.
We have not tried the duo which will be confined, anyway, to brief trips. The passenger seat is not very deep and no handle worthy of the name will ensure effective support on board. Finally, BMW has developed flexible and waterproof luggage specific to the NineT: tank and saddle bag. (see list of options)

Consumption

After 250 km, my reserve witness did not appear. Some of my colleagues, on the other hand, ended up at the limit of the reserve. The fill-ups were not all equal, but the on-board computer indicated an average of 6.2 L per 100 km. A very honest score.

Conclusion

With this model, BMW creates an extremely attractive Cafe-Roadster hybrid ready for the most personal adaptations. The German brand is also developing a range of clothing (jacket, jeans, helmet …) dedicated to the world of novelty..

All in muscle, but also in a designer dress, the nineT combines contrasts, elegantly combining retro and modern. The world is impatiently awaiting the 8,000 copies planned. American and Italian markets are particularly targeted. But there is also a strong dynamic in France for which 800 units are planned. Theoretically available from this month of March, it is better to count on the month of July. However, it will still cost € 15,000 to afford this neo-retro sculpture. A high price for a proven engine assembly, a massive fork but without adjustment and little electronics. As a reminder, an R1200R is displayed at € 13,050.

We will oppose him the Ducati Monster 1100 Evo, at 11,990 € and 13,690 € in a “Diesel” designer version. Efficient and, a little, customizable, the Bolognese does not lack assets but does not offer the same style difference. Another captivating Italian, the Moto Guzzi 1200 Griso 8V SE asking for € 12,490. In my opinion the closest overall, less personalization. Also, the Moto Morini 11.5 and 1200 Corsaro Veloce at 10,900 and 15,900 € are also potential challengers. Finally, the Honda CB1100EX ABS, priced at € 12,599, should be mentioned in this panel playing the card of the past. But the Japanese is no match either dynamically or in terms of equipment and seems very expensive.

More expensive than its rivals, but combining charm and sport, the nineT does not lack arguments, paying a successful tribute to its ancestors as to their craziest variations. Almost flawless, it is one of the rare concept that has come true. Only its price requires reflection. But does the reason hold out in the face of the passion for a dream machine by a "manufacture" with a propeller which is no less so??
