While the Japanese bring us accessible supermotards, BMW surprises (once again) and unveils its own concept of sporty trail. And not a motorcycle designed with a lot of research and market research. No, a machine developed by a handful of Bavarian staff enthusiasts. His name: HP2.
Here is indeed a whole new name for a bike bearing the acronym on the propeller. It inaugurates a new type of category for the manufacturer, oriented towards performance. Moreover, HP2 means “High Performance”, the 2 specifying the type of engine – Boxer 2 cylinders for this trail-enduro-sport. A machine intended for an informed and demanding clientele. And to satisfy them, the HP2 benefits from the know-how of a great team.

Taking as a basis the recent R 1200 GS, the Teutonic has been thoroughly revised in order to end up with an incredibly light machine for a twin-cylinder trail of this displacement. Consider that the HP2, all full facts, is below the 200 kg mark. All naked, it only displays 175 kg, the weight of Japanese hypersportives. And by detailing the machine, we are not at the end of our surprises. The whole front part has something to throw off the convinced BMWist: goodbye to the famous Telelever. The HP2 is equipped with a classic and large inverted 45mm fork, mandatory because the BMW system does not allow a travel as important as that displayed at 270 mm. Specificities of this fork; damping slaved to travel, compression not very sensitive to the anti-bottoming adjustment and particularly resistant coating of the tubes.
Above, holding the mudguard and encircling the single round headlight, there are 2 very robust bars, which can be used if necessary to pull the machine out of a delicate situation..
The dashboard is taken from the 1200 GS but amputated of the tachometer. The translucent material tank allows you to check the fuel level at a glance. The Paralever swingarm has been lengthened by 30 mm compared to the GS but the rear damping system is very interesting. The combined spring / shock absorber has a completely new pneumatic system. Weighing almost 2 times less than a conventional system, this element has many advantages, such as better resistance to heating, no clogging and bottoming of the suspension, certain qualities of adaptation, better progressiveness, etc….

A single disc at the front will ensure the braking of the HP2. Its hoses are sheathed in steel and it will be assisted by the rear brake of the GS but not the ABS, unavailable at first.
The mechanics are not left out. The twin has lost its balance shaft but gained watts – Power now stands at 105 hp. The box has been reinforced and the exhaust modified. With a more aggressive design, it loses 2 kg and part of its length. In return, it is not planned to fit side cases.

Thin, refined, sporty, the HP2 will be delivered with a kit including various protective parts: hand guards, engine guard, small transparent windscreen, protection for the torque housing, and a small steel cable ensuring the safety of the rear brake lever. No options but some accessories will be offered, such as the lowered saddle or the navigation system. Endowed with a certain versatility, the HP2 is primarily aimed at off-road fans, raiders, enduro and adventure enthusiasts. She may have some nice surprises in store for us.

After discovering the HP2, we can start dreaming about a range with a fiery temperament like the M series of cars from Munich. Imagine, for just a moment, an HP model of the K 1200 S, and sharpened versions of the future R 1200 R and S…
