“What is the most powerful hypersport on the market?” The answer will shock, and the Japanese will strangle themselves. With 193 hp, it’s a German, and it’s a BMW. The S 1000 RR, the Bavarian brand’s first 4-cylinder hypersport, announces dazzling power to mark the territory of the track.

After months of drooling over the SBK version, BMW has finally decided to unveil the road version of its S 1000 RR hypersport. The manufacturer will have waited until the last moment to unveil his jewel…. and for good reason. The FIM Superbike regulations allowed it until January 31, 2009 to finalize the production version – and thus make as many improvements and modifications as possible, which will be found in the racing version. The SBK winter tests will thus have made it possible to further sharpen the S 1000 RR that we will find on the tarmac this year..

And this BMW is more than a new sports car. Its hyper racy, taut silhouette, worthy of the bloodiest Japanese machines, is sure to turn the heads of amateurs and neophytes alike. Everyone will stay on their ass when they notice the blue and white propeller crest on the sides of the beast. “Is that a Behem?!? Impossible ! Looks like my ultra boost GSXBR1-W…. Certainly the Bavarian brand is climbing to the highest level of performance for the series – but we are now very far from cardan motorcycles, flat cylinders and Pullman travel. The S 1000 RR will fight against the best with their own weapons.
A perimeter frame made up of aluminum spars, supported by load-bearing reinforcements up to the front of the cylinder head, here is the cradle that accommodates the new Bavarian 4-cylinder. A very compact engine benefiting from all the experience acquired by BMW in competition. Not on a motorcycle, but in F1; and should I remind you of the level reached by the M3 and M5 ?!?
BMW S 1000 RR 2011For example, the camshafts are so small and light that they are almost the same size as in an F1 Sauber engine. This process allows the engine to be run at very high speeds and offers more freedom in the management of power and torque. Elements with which the S 1000 RR is very well equipped. With 193 hp at 13,000 rpm, this rocket becomes the benchmark for hypersports. And not swaying nags à la Hulk: the electronic management is announced as the most sophisticated in the world. 4 types of mapping can be selected by the pilot. Also included in the mechanics are titanium valves, 2 injectors per cylinder, an anti-dribble clutch and a multiple exhaust valve system to optimize torque. Its value exceeds 11 mkg. More than these figures, it is the audience that will amaze us. The traction control appears to be much more extensive than that of Ducati. Sensors measure the speed difference between the front and rear wheels, but also the incline of the motorcycle, to determine what needs to be cut.

Advertised at 183 kilograms dry, the teuton might be classified in the heavyweights of the category. The R1, GSX-R, CBR and ZXR are closer to 170 kgs. Wait, wait, wait! Let’s go through the technical sheet a bit to see what’s in his 183 kilos. A big beefy frame, an engine with lots of nags, a hyper-tough swingarm worthy of a world championship, a huge gas plenum chamber under the chassis (Beuark! Ugly as a dung but all good for the anti- pollution and a not too bulky pot), a fork of…. Ah, that’s beautiful. A nice big inverted 46mm fork adjustable from anywhere with big Brembo 4 piston radial calipers. And wires, cables, electronics – the equipment is to match: shifter, traction control system from the racing model, and sports ABS with 4 different modes (it remains to be seen which of these elements will be series, and how thick will the options catalog be). Add these elements on a Japanese and imagine how much the scale climbs. Now, let’s see the other number: 204 kg fully loaded. This sets the record straight. With the exception of the CBR 1000 RR, the other Japanese women carry almost the same number of kilos. And in its config with ABS, it is the sport with the lightest anti-lock on the market.

Frontal shock, lateral stupor, Behème is not going to be satisfied with that. It was necessary to mark the occasion at the design level. It’s his asymmetrical side that will get a lot of talk. The S 1000 RR is the first two-sided sports car: on the right side, the fairing side is designed like shark gills; on the left side, the panel is pierced with a more conventional extraction. The face is even more glaring and confusing. With 2 radically different optics (circular on the right, polygonal on the left), the look of the S 1000 RR is redoubled in boldness.

Some small details also deserve our attention. The bubble encompasses the upper part of the air intake, and its upper sides have 4 openings. The swing arm will be painted in titanium on the white and black colors. On the mustard green version (everyone’s favorite …), the arm will be aluminum color. With a little too much plastic and an integration almost in the style of the airbox, the machine would almost make us forget the protocol rigidity of its family.

While the S 1000 RR SBK is already in the world championship, the road version will not arrive until summer. However, it is already possible to reserve it at BMW dealerships. And for once, hang in there, the price of this BM will be almost reasonable. Just over 15,000 euros in Germany, it will rival that of an R1 or a CBR 1000 RR C-ABS.
