BMW S 1000 RR HP4 2014

HP for High Performance; the sports department of BMW Motorrad, similar to Motorsport and its 4 wheels (M3, M5, … etc). As a reminder, the HP2 Sport had propelled the Boxer to the height of its evolution. A superb machine for gentleman riders, very noticed during its participation in endurance races. The HP2 Enduro and Megamoto were also great achievements in their segments.

An S 1000 RR is already a very large caliber missile. But in the HP4 version, we find ourselves facing a machine largely optimized to grab the little seconds that are missing, while equipping yourself with beautiful parts and even more advanced electronic assistance..

A specific decoration and a set of racing stickers to sharpen the retina … you are more curious. With the contribution of carbon parts, the grafting of an Akrapovic silencer and lightened forged aluminum rims, this version of hypersport seriously loses weight. In series, the S 1000 RR displays 206.5 kg fully loaded; the HP4 drops below 200 kg. How? ‘Or’ What ? Most of this mass is lost by the lighter wheels which save 2.4 kilos and a titanium exhaust line allowing a gain of 4.5 kilos.

Brembo braking is entrusted to monobloc radial calipers trapping special pads for the HP4. For more efficiency, it is assisted by a different version of Race ABS, refined by feedback from IDM (German speed championship).

The engine does not benefit from changes (with 200 horsepower, there is already plenty to do) except for the breathing of the Pot Akra in titanium and a slightly revised engine management: whatever the mode, the 4 cylinders balance full power. . Engine manufacturers have also inflated the torque between 6,000 and 9,750 rpm to better squirt the turn. In “Rain” mode, they still smoothed the watts between 2,500 and 8,000 rpm.
To save thousandths, the shifter is installed as standard and allows you to change gears without breaking the load. Not a second’s respite in the straight line for the new big 200 mm wide rubber seal.

On the part-cycle side, the HP4 brings sportswomen into a new world thanks to the silicon caravels, the armored wedges of sensors, algorithms and software. Increased efficiency and unknown versatility are the order of the day with DDC electronic suspensions. Quèsaco? Dynamic Damping Control; self-adapting damping according to road conditions and riding style.
Already with BMW’s ESA and other servo-assisted suspensions, we could leave the screwdrivers at home. This time it goes much further. The DDC control unit constantly receives a wealth of information from the various sensors (motorcycle speed, inclination, travel travel, etc.) then will adapt the damping in a few thousandths of a second. Depending on the driving behavior of the driver and the road conditions, the system adjusts the hydraulics to the point where it is needed..
The DDC also acts according to your preferences and the driving modes chosen. Thus, in “Rain” and “Sport”, the damping is calibrated towards more flexibility. In “Race” and “Slick”, the calibration is much firmer. A sports car “harder” on the circuit and then more flexible when going on the road, and all this just at the push of a button !!! Big top !

BMW S 1000 RR HP4 2014

Let’s stay on the track for a bit. BMW has thought about cannon starts and adds a departure assistance widget, as on the Aprilia RSV4 APRC. The “Launch Control” is with you to precisely dose the power so that you can concentrate on other things. No, not the umbrella girl … The bend all over there, where you have to enter first. The maximum torque is regulated according to what the rear wheel can digest and the load shedding of the front wheel. And the regulation does not stop there. In 1st, the engine speed is limited to 8,000 rpm up to 60 km / h. Then, in deuz ‘, the torque is recalibrated according to the ratio and sends the optimum mash. The “Launch Control” is deactivated in 3rd gear, when the motorcycle goes through 30 ° of angle or when another DTC mode is chosen. It also prevents wheelies.
But rest assured, the HP4 knows how to play: without Launch Control, you can “wheel” as long as the bike does not angle more than 25 ° in “Race” mode or 30 ° in “Slick” mode.

Here, precisely, the “Slick” mode. Behème tweaked it a bit on the HP4, with optimized traction control. It can be adapted during piloting, over an adjustment range of +7 to -7. A push on the appropriate button on the left stalk allows the desired calibration.

The advertised price exceeds 21,000 euros to afford this impressive tracker. Limited edition breed beast, each HP4 has its serial number laser engraved on the upper triple clamp. More anecdotally, this super S 1000 RR wins a smoke bubble, LED indicators and an elongated engine spoiler. Like any BMW, the options catalog is widely stocked, allowing for example the passenger kit. Yes, as a good exclusive sports car, the HP4 is originally piloted solo.

A Competition pack is available to “sport” the HP4 even more and indulge yourself with an even more pronounced racing taste. It includes a series of carbon parts, footrests, brake and clutch levers HP, blue painted rims, all for a series of 7 purple.
Want more? So look at the HP Race side and randomly draw a data logger, a calibration kit, an inverted gear grid, a Power Kit, etc….
