It’s hard to know who the French bikers are: from the bad boy of the 50s to the quadra in a 21st century suit, a lot of oil has flowed under the bridges… An in-depth TNS Sofres survey for GEMA Prevention provides a clearer picture.

Equipment rate of bikers in France in 2009

90% of two-wheeler drivers claim to wear "often or always"gloves and 69% a motorcycle jacket, but all other protections remain in the minority: only 36% wear"often or always"a back protector or boots, 34% a motorcycle pants and 20% a neck protector … Note that they are still 17% to wear"often or always"a reflective yellow vest !

The enthusiasts are unsurprisingly the best equipped: 98% wear gloves, 91% a motorcycle jacket, 58% boots, 47% a back protector or motorcycle pants, 27% a neck protector … and 5% a superb fluorescent vest !

The moderates are "less well equipped than one might think", underlines the study, while the transgressors are"rather well equipped"because of the regular use of their two-wheelers, whatever the weather. Surprisingly, it is in this category that we find more followers of Karl Lagerfeld’s yellow vest (40%!), while that the stressed are "particularly poorly equipped": only 85% wear gloves, 38% a suitable jacket and 9% motorcycle boots.

Finally, among the 451 drivers who say they transport "regularly"one passenger, only 68% of said passengers wear gloves, 50% a motorcycle jacket, 25% motorcycle boots, 24% back protector, 23% motorcycle pants, 17% a neck protector … and 13% a fluorescent vest.
