Electric vehicles are also becoming increasingly popular with scooters. Thanks to the new design freedom due to the new drive concept, the two-wheelers are transformed into design pieces. The first new electric vehicles will be rolling out to dealers this year.

When you say scooter, you mean Vespa. The Italian two-wheeler has stood for freedom, carefreeness, sun, wine and of course amore for a good 75 years. In short: Italian attitude to life. Not least because of this, the Piaggio scooter is so popular, especially north of the Alps. The simple but unmistakable look with the wide leg shield, the tie and the seat with the thick cheeks is considered the standard of scooter design. That’s why many competitors try to come close to this ideal without ever achieving it. And a copy is just a copy. Only manufacturers such as Honda, Yamaha, Peugeot or even Aprilia take a different approach when it comes to design, but not always a respectable one, and practicality is often the focus.

Even with the electric scooters, the ghosts were first. The one remained faithful to the Vespa-Ideal and others stressed from the Italian ur meter.

Naon: Engine in the wheel hub

Most just as much successfully successful with this request, as it was already in the variants with internal combustion engine. But the electromobility offers many ways to create something special due to the small space of the drive. Exactly this accommodates the Berlin start-up Naon around the former Porsche designer Benjamin tree and just pack the engine in the rear wheel hub.

The edgy result is similar to a vehicle from the science fiction film "Gattaca" in which the optics of all involved is puristic-stylish. The clear, almost geometrically strict design language is successful. However, the premiere of the design piece could be postponed significantly. "Ten years of experience in the design of premium sports cars have helped me to develop the necessary instinct to create the perfect proportions and design themes for premium products," explains Benjamin Baum.

BMW: CE 04 with a maximum of 42 hp

From March, BMW will also set a design benchmark with the CE 04. The Munich scooter is much more massive than the more delicate Naon Zero-One and looks more like a Batmobile. The BMW single-track vehicle follows up its imposing appearance with action: the all-electric scooter is available in two power levels with 15 kW / 20 hp continuous power (31 kW / 42 hp peak power) and with lightly braked foam and 11 kW / 15 hp (peak power : 23 kW / 31 hp), which can then be driven with driving license classes A1 or B196.

The flat battery has a capacity of 8.9 kilowatt hours, is located under the floor and the electric motor is derived from the electric motor that provides propulsion in the 225xe Active Tourer. The batteries are fully charged again after four hours and 20 minutes; with the optional quick charger with up to 6.9 kW of power it is only one hour and 40 minutes. The energy stores are then filled from 20 to 80 percent in 45 minutes.

With a top speed of 120 km/h you are definitely not underpowered and the range of around 130 kilometers or 100 kilometers for the reduced-power version is enough for a relaxed tour, thanks to the 15-inch tires and the chassis with a telescopic fork at the front and a single-sided swingarm at the rear also very comfortable. The long wheelbase helps with stability and comfort.

With 12.000 euros as expensive as a small car

The BMW CE 04 costs 11.990 euros, is the luxury mobile among the new scooters and offers a lot: A 10.25-inch display serves as an information center including navigation and the assistants such as ABS, traction control and the optional ESP convey security. If desired, there is an ABS that also intervenes when the vehicle is in an inclined position. Similar to cars, the e-scooter offers different driving modes (dynamic optional) and shovels energy into the batteries when braking. The BMW CE 04 has various little things, like an actively ventilated cell phone charging compartment with USB-C connection and the fact that you can open the helmet compartment from the side without lifting the bench.

Husqvarna Vectorr: 95 km range

The Husqvarna Vector completes the design trio. The electric scooter from the KTM subsidiary is intended for urban use with a top speed of 45 km/h and a maximum range of 95 kilometers.

As with other electric scooters, the front wheel is attached to a swing arm and the 4 kW / 5.4 hp electric motor is housed in the rear swing arm. The battery can also be removed and recharged within two hours from the socket at home.

The Austrian-Chinese manufacturer is also showing its edge with the electric scooter SK3. The electric scooter has space for the second battery, which is subject to a surcharge, and at a speed of 45 km/h you can travel up to 160 kilometers with it. The battery is recharged in around 4.5 hours. The central motor with an output of 6.2 kW / 8.4 hp also achieves a top speed of 90 km/h. The chassis with two shock absorbers at the front and rear together with the 14-inch tires should ensure the necessary stability. Braking is via CBS brakes (Combined Brake System), in which both brakes are automatically used when decelerating. With the large display you are informed about everything while driving and with a price of at least 3.990 euros also reasonably affordable.

  1. May be so
But you forget one thing, such a microcar with a top speed of 45 km/h is definitely a traffic obstacle. Why does everyone else have to drive after something like that? Because it will not be the case that the parts are only moved in the 30 zone. A dream when such a bowl on the country road forces you to overtake. I can drive past a scooter much more easily.

  2. Think for a moment…
Are there any skeptics about the scooters now?. of security? Is it being considered here to do any crash tests to show how the vehicles behave in the event of an accident? Are there any speed concerns?? I do not think so. So why is the big safety club unpacked when a vehicle has 4 wheels and a self-contained driver’s cab, only drives 45 km/h and is actually much safer and even more practical (weather, rain, etc.) is? I’m thinking of microcars, which I think are really interesting. Oh, one more thing… The price of these scooters is also not to be scoffed at. I’ve ridden a motorcycle myself for almost 30 years and to be honest I feel much safer in a microcar when it comes to safety.
