From November 1, 2020, European law allows the A2 driving test to be taken on motorcycles with only 250 cm³. So far, at least 395 cm³ were required.

In order to obtain the A2 driving license, the driving school and test motorcycle must meet certain requirements. Up to now, motorcycles used in the driving test for the A2 driving license had to have a displacement of at least 395 cm³ and generate between 27 and 48 hp. The relationship between power and weight of the motorcycle also plays a role here (power-to-weight ratio up to 0.2 kW / kg).

On May 5, 2020, the European Union published a new driving license directive ((EU) 2020/612) which provides for a reduction in the minimum cubic capacity of test motorcycles for the A2 license. This means that from November 1, 2020, all member states of the European Union must have incorporated the lower cubic capacity for A2 test motorcycles into their national laws. As the European motorcyclist association FEMA reports, many, but not all, member countries have already done so. Incidentally, the regulation should also be adopted in the non-EU member state Great Britain.

“Smaller ones” Bikes are actually sufficient

The change in the A2 driving license regulation could be of benefit to all those who respect more powerfully motorized A2 bikes. In addition, many owners of the A2 driving license do not seem to attach great importance to exhausting the full 48 hp. “Smaller ones” Motorcycles could therefore represent a minor hurdle for all those interested in driving licenses. For driving schools, the new regulation means that new training machines have to be purchased.

It shouldn’t be a big secret that motorcycles with a maximum of 48 hp are very popular. For many motorcyclists, the less powerful A2 bikes seem to be sufficient in terms of performance, which is why an adaptation of the A2 driving license regulation could make sense.
