Choosing the right school motorcycle

Dec. 26, 2018

Obtaining a motorcycle license is not a decision to be taken lightly. You invest savings for a long-term project and it is normal to demand the best. Sometimes this is where the real puzzle begins: how to be sure of a good motorcycle school ? Avoid scams, overcrowded lessons, incompetent instructors, etc. Here are some tips to guide you in your research.

Choosing the right school motorcycle

Choose a motorcycle school nearby

Use word of mouth to find out about the various schools around you or your workplace. A driving school a five minute walk away is ideal. Especially if you have to pass the highway code, or retake it if your last driver’s license more than five years old. To prepare for this "general theoretical test", you will have to review and follow the lessons sometimes several times a week at the driving school.

But beware : if it’s to receive poor motorcycle training, you might as well settle for a few extra miles of transport. It’s an investment.

About the practical training, beware of "we take you home": this saving of time is sometimes done to the detriment of teaching because the journey may be repetitive.

On the other hand, the shuttle service to take you to the driving training location is a big advantage..

The importance of a reputable motorcycle school

Official recognition

A first detail that should be obvious: the logo of the Association pour la Formation des Motards, or the CER (Road Education Centers) and ECF (French Driving Schools).

These motorcycle schools are committed to meeting rigorous and complete specifications concerning the equipment, the platform and the number of students per teacher.

The educational aspect

The training center does not have to look like a factory. You should be seen as a student, more than just a customer.

For the theoretical training, check that road safety but also technical is taught, namely the operation of the two-wheeler itself but also driving (braking, acceleration, etc.). These concepts must be addressed in depth.

If you feel a cramming tendency, to learn by heart without understanding, turn around. Finally, take care that the lessons meet the questions asked by the examiner when passing the permit.

The price

Beware of tempting offers. Slashing prices come at the expense of quality education. In total, a budget between 900 and 1,400 euros will have to be planned. This price includes administration fees, evaluation hours, code lessons, etc..

The law imposes a minimum of 20 hours of training : check that this time is well divided into 8 hours of plateau and 12 hours of circulation on a motorcycle. Trips to the motorcycle track should not be included !

Schedules

If you work during the week, choose Saturday classes. Please note, a lesson can last three hours. Some schools offer lessons from 7 a.m..

Number of students per course

As with all permits, the more students there are, the less time the instructor will have to give you personalized advice. During driving lessons, you should not be more than three per instructor.

The learning booklet

It is he who recaps your achievements and your shortcomings and help you move forward. It is up to the instructor to fill it out. Be careful, some people just write down the hours worked.

Pay attention to the equipment provided by the school motorcycle

Educational tools are important. First for theory, an enclosed space should be given to the classroom. It must be equipped with a code examination box and recent slides.

Make sure there is one motorbike per student during driving lessons. There must be at least one 125 cc motorcycle renowned for its maneuverability for evaluations and beginners.

Vehicles must be in good condition and fitted with regulatory signage (two mirrors, four indicators, lighting, license plate). Finally, analyze the training location: its proximity, but also its quality: is it a private track or a supermarket parking lot, etc..

Finally, although it is preferable to come with your own motorcycle gear, and helmet, some schools lend safety accessories. Check that they are approved and in good condition.

Do not hesitate to ask questions to make the choice between 2 motorcycle schools

If the questions remain, burst the abscess before submitting the registration file: how many students are there per course? Is the board shared with another school? Is the instructor an experienced motorcyclist? What are the delays between the tests ? There is no such thing as a dumb question !

Also you can know the success rates : the figures are public, available at the prefecture. Finally, for motorbike driving like the car license, if the accelerated license can appeal for its time saving, it does not guarantee a good knowledge or an improvement.

Note that to go further in learning to drive, especially on the circuit, you can then opt for the driving course.
