More grip in the rain and more durability: the best of both worlds ?

Daily, walks and road rally: a tire tested over 6,500 km

Front / rear view Continental Road Attack 3Continental has developed its range of sport-touring tires with the ContiRoadAttack 3, successor to the ContiRoadAttack 2 Evo, released in 2014. Like all manufacturers, the objective with each evolution is to improve grip / behavior in the rain while improving longevity. The new Conti is no exception to the rule.

Technologies

The ContiRoadAttack3 has evolved in terms of technologies, integrating Multigrip, TractionSkin, EasyHandling, Raingrip and 0 ° belt.

The mixture itself comprises a higher level of silica for a faster rise in temperature. This higher silica content also helps to increase the longevity of the tire compared to the previous model..

The MultiGrip makes it possible to offer softer shoulders, offering a more homogeneous behavior when setting on the angle. EasyHandling offers more liveliness. 0 ° steel belt improves stability by preventing tire deformation under the action of centrifugal forces.

The new design with new tread patterns aims to increase water drainage, working together between the front and rear tires..

The choice

For this long-term road test, we tested the tire in all conditions, from everyday to the ride to the extreme, in rally, with two main criteria in mind: the quality of road holding and this, in all circumstances, as well as longevity. And we chose a Yamaha MT-09 Tracer, knowing that the tire works just as well on sports cars of the BMW S1000R type … at the end of the Sport-GT segment. And yes, sporty does not necessarily mean SportAttack3.

The Continental Road Attack 3

The first benefit of this new tire is obvious: it is a tire that is instantly ready for use, even new. Because the Traction Skin, the Continental process consisting of a micro-rough tread on the surface of the tread, offers two advantages here: firstly, there is no more paraffin resulting from the mold release and therefore the tire can give immediately its potential, then, it turned out that the warm-up time was almost nonexistent and that here too, we are immediately confident, from the first turns.

What are you doing for the holidays ?

The tire was therefore used over a weekend in the Vosges as well as a Road Rally (les Volcans, in Auvergne, where it made it possible to make the connections and the specials over more than 420 kilometers)..

In both cases, the use was close with a relatively sustained rate of use. Once again, the short warm-up time is really appreciable, especially at the start of a special where you have to wait too long before setting off, because the guy from before was very successful. There, we find ourselves in confidence from the start and it is appreciable.

We were able to put the Conti to the test during a rally

On the other hand, the front tire has a rather rounded profile which does not help the machine to fall in turns quickly, when you have a slightly incisive steering. Suddenly, compared to more sporty climbs, the machine leaves a small feeling of heaviness when entering a curve. Nothing dramatic however, because the ContiRoadAttack3 has another quality: that of offering a perfect feeling on the conditions of grip and the work of the front axle. For comparison, this machine had also been fitted with Michelin Pilot Road 4s before and the feedback is much better with the Conti than with the Michelin..

Continental Road Attack 3 small road test

In the wet, it is also very satisfying, both for the grip and here again, for the feedback; at the limit and on the same bike, however, I found that the Michelin Pilot Road 4 nevertheless made it possible to go a little further in the cornering even if the Conti gives better information beforehand..

Consistency and durability

Continental announces longer durability of its ContiRoadAttack3: it is clear that the German tire manufacturer is telling the truth. Above all, the ContiRoadAttack3 sees its behavior remain constant over time. Its forms of wear are regular, it does not flatten even by increasing the daily trips in Ile de France and this allows to use its qualities to the end..

The Road Attack 3 during editing

New, it was measured with 0.7 cm of gum. After 4000 km, as shown in the photo below, it has 0.4 cm left and the level of wear is perfectly consistent. After 6,500 km, 0.3 cm of rubber remains.

In fact, according to some very learned calculations (a good rule of three, in fact), the rear should hold 10,000 km, which is not bad at all on a coupler machine like the MT-09 Tracer. The front, for its part, will probably hold 20,000 kilometers given its current level of wear but we will update this information as the test progresses … which continues..

Conclusion

So here is a tire that keeps its promises and which, even if it defines itself as Sport-GT, allows in addition to go to gas in the special (without needing to switch to SportAttack3) and to have fun, while returning by road, in the rain, in a nice combination of safety and longevity.

  1. After having recently had an 1190 KTM Adventure (Top, except the engine that burned the thighs!), I like both (especially the Dorsoduro) as much as they are on sale, but is it reliable and is it it is resold ??

… I also have excellent memories of my ex Honda Crosstourer 1200 (with proven reliability!).
