Driving report AC Schnitzer R 1200 GS
The AC Schnitzer tuners trim the BMW R 1200 GS in the direction of speedster curves for speedy country road trips.
The GS is often referred to as the egg-laying woolly milk sow. She can
everything is very neat, from touring and off-roading to sport. Whereby quite properly implies that there is still scope for optimization in one direction or the other. And that’s exactly where tuners come in: They try to promote certain qualities. AT.C Schnitzer, for example, cares less about the tourist and more about the sporting genes of the GS.
It starts with an appropriate design. Large plastic parts take up the original line of the tank fairing and continue it to the rear. There a cover for the pillion seat ensures a sporty finish. The conversion also includes a cockpit fairing and a front fender.
Schnitzer puts it on 17-inch wheels with widths of 3.5 inches at the front and 5.5 inches at the rear so that the GS not only looks sleeker, but also drives it. Conti Sport Attack in the dimensions 120/70 and 180/55 then fit on it. The engine of the test machine remained unchanged. The »Revolution« silencer alone ensures better acoustics and a little more pressure.
From a technical point of view, this is a rather subtle intervention, but it does bring a lot for sporty GS drivers. Tea Schnitzer GS is very precise and easy to handle, the Contis offer a lot of grip and good feedback. It goes without saying that wider tires cause a little more righting moment when braking in an inclined position, but that is within narrow limits. In contrast to many other conversions to 17-inch models, the Schnitzer GS remains very stable even at top speed on the motorway.
The good overall impression of the tuned R 1200 GS is probably also due to the fact that the basis is a positive outlier within the series distribution of the GS. In contrast to most of the test machines that MOTORRAD has driven recently, the gearshift works extremely well, you almost miss the loud clicking sound with every gearshift.
