Germany’s top seller with an improved transmission

With the torsion damper from the Adventure model, revised shift kinematics and new transmission shafts including bearings, the new BMW R 1200 GS of model year 2017 wants to show better shifting manners. There is now calm in the Bavarian drive train?

Before and after: MOTORRAD reader Werner Schuber (right) and editor Peter Mayer at the Tête-à-tête with the 2015 and 2017 GS.

The MOTORRAD survey in the summer of 2013 (issue 21/2013) produced a devastating result: 39 percent of the participating owners of the BMW, which was new at the time and presented in 2013 R 1200 GS attested the new release “unacceptable problems” or considered “fine-tuning to be urgently needed”. The biggest stumbling blocks: Loud switching noises and roaring in push mode. BMW located the cause of the capricious shifting behavior in the clutch. Inaccurately manufactured clutch pressure pieces allowed too much oil to flow into the clutch. The high residual drag torque of the clutch under these circumstances causes the rough shiftability. However, replacing them with true-to-size pressure pins was not always successful. Crashing gears are still a constant topic at the regular boxers’ tables to this day.

The drone in the drive train, which BMW explains with the rotational irregularity of the cardan, the Bavarians, on the other hand, already noticed in the following year. A torsion damper was used in the 2014 Adventure model, which has a longer spring deflection and the articulation angle of the cardan joints is greater than that of the basic GS. In a direct comparison (MOTORRAD 14/2014), the drive worked more smoothly, reduced the roar in the transmission tunnel to a tolerable minimum.

2015 GS and 2017 GS in comparison

And now? From model year 2017, the basic version of the BMW R 1200 GS will not only receive the shock absorber, but also a revised gearshift drum actuation including modified transmission shafts and bearings. Is everything going to be okay now? Werner Schuber, owner of a 2015 GS, hopes so. The native of southern Baden, who lives near Freiburg, asked MOTORRAD for advice about the unsightly acoustic background music. Exactly on the day on which the revised GS rolled into the editorial underground car park. Perfect timing to recruit the private GS on a joint excursion as a before model.

During a cold start, the wheels of the first gear slip into each other completely silently on both bikes. It’s not new. The clutch, which was probably still oil-poor after starting, also disconnected with all previous models without any problems. On the winding mountain and valley railway of the Kaiserstuhl, the home round of the 55-year-old commercial vehicle businessman, the two boxers get up to temperature. Vehicle replacement every few kilometers. And always with the same result. Two drivers, one opinion. The gearbox of the 2015 GS shifts bony. Especially in the lower three gears, a hard metal blow accompanies the gear change. Not all of the time, however. If the motorcycle is moved quickly and at a higher speed level, it steps acoustically through the gearbox almost unobtrusively. The gearshift becomes the “King Klonk” especially in moderate everyday use with a high proportion of constant travel or gentle accelerations. MOTORRAD also made this experience with many test machines and the endurance test BMW R 1200 GS.

Switching shocks reduced to a tolerable level

And the new BMW R 1200 GS for the 2017 model year? The revision of the shift drum actuation, which was not technically specified by BMW, is bearing noticeable fruit. The comparatively hard shift feel of the previous model is noticeably softer in the 2017 version. The switching shocks have not completely disappeared, but have been reduced to a tolerable, inconspicuous level. Starting with a warm engine suggests that the shift kinematics are responsible for the improvement. Engaging first gear is still accompanied by an audible and palpable thud. This phenomenon, which is probably still caused by the clutch, has only changed slightly compared to the previous model. But at least so much that stepping on the gear lever should no longer frighten passers-by at the pedestrian traffic lights.

The pacification can also be attributed to the torsional damper. The spring-loaded part now also does a good job in the basic version of the BMW R1200 GS model 2017, also eliminating the roar there to an equally tolerable level. Even with the ESA (two-person setting) up, with the cardan clacking audibly so far, there is now calm in the drive train. In this respect: There is still a long way to go for the GS control center to achieve perfection. But the improvements are taking effect and are clearly noticeable. The new GS should convince the critical 39 percent. Werner Schuber too. And something else good: The new one is available for the same tariff (basic price: 14,950 euros) as before.

That is new
