Ducati 1198 2010

Even tight as close as possible to the frame, we suspected that the twin Testastretta Evoluzione found its suit “wide”. And then, by dint of seeing the 1098 R doing the beautiful Superbike with Troy Bayliss, the 1098 “basic” began to see red, much more than its scarlet dress masked its bubbling..

“Because that’s the way it is ….” she said to herself before delving into the paddock sister’s stuff. A hammer turn, 2 screwdrivers, 3 spreaders. The 1098 did not ask for its rest, dived in cm3 and returned to us in 1198, both in the appellation and in its new displacement.

Now, the border between the road machine and the pure juice Superbike has really narrowed. With its new airspace, the 1198 now spits 170 cannons at 9,750 rpm. A border between 2 stages: 10 hp more than the 1098 it replaces and 10 less than the R with its elite status.
In this kind of overweight, the couple is not shy to overflow too. With 0.9 mkg more, its ceiling is now 13.4 mkg, still at 8,000 rpm.
It must be said that the gases have room to express themselves: an increase of 2 mm for the bore (106 mm) and 3.2 mm for the stroke (67.9 mm). The dimensions of the Italian twin remain very supersquare. This enormous bore accommodates valves that are 4% larger, sized 43.5mm at the intake and 35.5mm at the exhaust. The camshaft profile is 10% nastier than before. Large displacement equals greater need for air. The 1198 took care to also prick 63.9 mm intake ducts, those of the R. Thanks to the use of new technology in the manufacture of the crankcases and the massive use of magnesium, the engine weighs 3 kg less. And there are also 500 grams lost by the use of new optical units.

On the chassis side, the evolution is less obvious. Ducati has reserved technological refinement for the S version. Let’s not hesitate: in addition to the additional 10 hp, the sporty Bolognese has lost a total of 2 kg. The frame, rigid at will and highly technical, calls for few complaints. Unless you do the road without having the technical background necessary to appreciate its temperament … ๐Ÿ˜‰ The trellis frame with 34 mm diameter tubes and 1.5 mm thick do not change, except in color if works on the 848, the standard, the S or the R.
These are Showa suspensions that we find on the 1198, both front and rear, with height adjustment for the shock absorber. The suspensions are, as it should be, adjustable in all directions. The fork remains a beautiful object, inverted and fitted with one-piece brake calipers with 330mm discs. To have better is to look for Ohlins, and it is on the 1198 S.

The dress remains, sublime, majestic, disturbing, captivating. The engine caught in the turmoil of performance will have waited only 2 years before getting the best of Ducati production. The 1198 only lacks 10 horsepower, Ohlins and traction control to match the finest Ducati gem. But like any apprentice, prove yourself on this one, then consider the S version before fantasizing about the R. Dream like madness starts here.
