5,000 km test

Non-modular Sport-GT model from the Korean brand HJC, replacing the RPHA-ST, the RPHA-70 full-face helmet evolves towards an even more dynamic style. For the best of touring and particularly remarkable overall quality.

Discovery

In terms of sales, HJC is the second brand in France, selling an average volume of 100,000 to 120,000 helmets per year, behind the national manufacturer Shark. And France is the leading market in Europe for the brand, which is why HJC is a partner of the French Grand-Prix at Le Mans..

In its contrasting matt VIAS color, the RPHA-70 already combines elegance and sportiness with a quality that is expressed as soon as the box is opened. If its general lines evoke speed, it is nevertheless a road helmet that we discover when leaving the thick protective cover. HJC also supplies a factory-supplied anti-fog Pinlock visor and the clear UV-resistant visor is pre-fitted for tear-off films…. the two universes therefore coexist everywhere. Special feature of the brand, the screen is equipped with a central metal locking control, also very qualitative.

Curved base, discrete ribs and flats, profiled chin bar and aerodynamic spoiler on the rear, the RPHA-70 definitely speaks a GT language mixed with racing. Its construction is in its image, with a hybrid shell of in-house “PIM + (Premium Integrated Matrix) technology. especially the weight. With 1,400 g in size M / 58, this HJC helmet is hardly heavier than a sport full-face. yet it incorporates a retractable sunscreen with its mechanism, operated by sliding slider on the left side.

HJC still uses its PIM + shell in composite fibers

Delicate to succeed, the matte finish of this model suffers no complaints, perfectly integrating the various graphic elements. Lettering, edging and cutting of decorative films are crisp and with great precision. The same goes for the adjustment of the ventilation parts..

Rear of the integral HJC RPHA 70

Studied in a wind tunnel, the careful aerodynamics also benefits ventilation. Few helmets incorporate as many air intakes, 8 in number and even less with style and efficiency. For these elements, dynamism is everywhere. On the chin bar, a large slider opens two flaps ensuring possible demisting and fresh air intake. We then appreciate the presence of a removable nasal deflector profiled in flexible material, ensuring additional comfort. Below, a new mesh opening is operated from the inside. At the top, a large control slides on two levels, allowing simultaneous suction and evacuation of flows. It is framed further by two plates forming ailerons. Incorporating discreet rockers actuating secondary aerators, these elements give an aeronautical aspect to the RPHA-70. Finally, two venturi effect extractors are fitted to the back of the helmet..

HJC RPHA 70 spoiler

The base of the helmet also reflects the quality of assembly and finish of the Korean helmet. On the chin guard, an anti-swirl flap including a removable part thus allows a simple and effective length adjustment. A rot-resistant textured coating protects the contact area when the RPHA-0 is placed on the floor. Waterproof, this surface reduces dirt and especially water impregnation from below. A common phenomenon when driving very wet on a motorway in the water fog of traffic.

Same treatment for the chinstrap tabs, a little short, but thick and wide, equipped with a double D buckle. Long, the adjustment strap is attached by press stud so as not to snap in the wind.

Threading

The RPHA-70 has three outer shell sizes each covering the following sizes: XXS-XS-S, M-L and XL-XXL. Guaranteeing better comfort for any type of body shape, this choice also avoids playing too much with the thickness of the foams.
The foams receive an interior Multicool textile covering, removable and washable. HJC specifies that the fabric is anti-bacterial, anti-odor, anti-perspiration and quick-drying. A real integrated laundry. These linings also offer the possibility of emergency disassembly, in the event of an accident, of the side elements, in order to facilitate the removal of the helmet..

HJC RPHA 70 sun screen

The first fitting reveals a very firm comfort and a very enveloping "fit". This feeling of interior support hardly varies over time, proving the good quality of the foams used. Particularly ergonomic, the cushions follow the anatomy of the face and do not leave the ears too "floating". A good point for soundproofing. Likewise, refined towards the temples, the lateral supports naturally let the temples of glasses slip through for a perfect fit on the nose. One without faults.

Dynamic test

The screen switches over 5 levels, very smoothly, without slamming, leaving a small space before it closes completely. With its central locking pin, handling of the screen is natural and does not pull the visor to one side when it is opened. In short, comfort for any occasion. Closed, the seal is excellent and, just as important, the reopening is intuitive. Finally, the handling of the sunscreen is also easy and silent, very well guided by flexible mechanics. And what a pleasure to benefit from such protection on command, without bringing two visors ….

From the urban evolution, we feel the effects of the many open air vents. The top air intake is particularly effective, bringing a lot of freshness. All air intakes in action, the RPHA-70 allows you to face the hottest days with serenity. And, whatever the mount, from the roadster to the sports car, passing by the trail, the level of soundproofing is high, the parasitic noises zero. Driving without earplugs on departmental and medium distances is quite possible. However, I can only recommend the usual protective devices, essential on long journeys, whatever the helmet. Finally, at high speed, the Sport-GT HJC helmet lets you appreciate its studied aerodynamics. Compact, streamlined, the RPHA-70 stabilizes the head and limits any eddies. Only complaint, the eye relief is a little reduced and requires a larger gesture in case of change of lanes.

Visor disassembly / assembly

A point of excellence for the HJCs: in the maximum open position, all you have to do is successively tilt the levers located on the visor axis plates…. and the screen is free. It is just as easy to replace it, once repositioned, by simply pressing the ends of the screen. Even more than in the competition with comparable systems (Scorpion), this system and its turntables seem much safer and more durable. You only have to see the metal fixings of the latter to be convinced.

Conclusion

With an appreciable build quality, fit and finish, the full HJC RPHA-70 is also very versatile. From travelers looking for great comfort and higher than average soundproofing to more sporty bikers wishing to benefit from a practical retractable solar visor without prohibitive overweight, this helmet could well represent a very qualitative solution..

The helmet offers a wide choice of 12 versions, available in several classic or more exclusive colors and priced from € 399.90 to € 449.90 (recommended price) for my test model. Count around 50 € less in the store. A rather correct pricing position in view of the overall performance of this high-end helmet with guaranteed durability. The special RPHA 70 Carbon HYDRUS / MC5 version, with wide fibers, will still charge € 549.90…. but what style !

The helmet is here in its Vias decoration

For my part, this model is the most homogeneous helmet that I have had to test, effectively combining design, comfort, ventilation and finishes. A highly attractive product for users with versatile motorcycles, driving on long or fast roads and sometimes on circuits.
