7,000 kilometers with the C2

The Schuberth C2 is the top of the range modular that appeared in 2005, replacing the Concept, which it has significantly improved in terms of comfort and soundproofing. Fiber helmet, meeting the CE-R 22.05 safety standard, guaranteed for two years, including a sun visor, it is also one of the most expensive modulars at nearly 500 euros (350 euros on the internet).

When faced with a modular, the three a priori that come to mind are: noise, price and weight. Test.

Discovery

STRONG fiber helmet – Duroplast reinforced with special fiber – the Schuberth appears as a compact helmet, rather round, without artifice or decoration. If it weighs 1710 grams on the scale, the shell alone weighs only 450 grams.

It is available in several colors: white, blue with white stripe, light gray, dark gray (anthracite) and black. The workmanship is excellent and the helmet exudes seriousness and solidity.

Optical class 1 visor (highest standard) with anti-scratch treatment, anti-fog high-clear4 and anti-UV interior coating, locking indicator, opening and closing with a single clip, it appears complete on the paper.

The chinstrap is equipped with a quick clip type fastener, easy to put on and take off. It also has the A.R.O.S system – Anti-Roll-Off-System – which prevents the helmet from pivoting forward.

The whole interior can be disassembled for cleaning at 30 ° C.

Threading

The helmet is almost closed at the base with acoustic collar. It is this specific, particularly closed neck that notably ensures efficient soundproofing. No need therefore to pass it as an integral. It is slipped open, in the "jet" position.

The C2 can be put on and taken off with glasses; even with so-called "pierced" glasses.

Once put on and even without having closed it, you are already partly cut off from the outside world. Ears are enclosed in a small space impressively dampening outside noise.

Nine, the foams compress well, even strongly, cheeks and jaw. Interior Techskin material is pleasant.

When the headphones are closed, you can hardly hear someone speaking next to you in the normal way.

Two indicators, to the left and to the right in the field of vision, indicate or not that the helmet is properly closed. The indicator then appears raised and in red if the headset is not properly closed.

The visor is easily raised and closed with a gloved hand, thanks to two well-positioned notches.

The ventilation on the top of the helmet and the front one are easy to handle, instinctively even given their position, with one hand.

Only the button for fitting the sun visor, placed on the left side of the helmet, requires a little practice to find and handle it right away.

Warning ! The C2 is quite small. Used to “M”, the C2 in M created a bar on the forehead instantly. On the other hand, in "L" shape, it is perfectly in my size, not too big, and is very comfortable.

"Jet" position

In town, it is possible to ride in the "jet" position, chin guard raised, even if this position is not recommended / approved according to Schuberth. In fact, if the road is clean, the chin bar holds up perfectly. But all it takes is a major defect in the road surface causing the motorcycle to jerk slightly for the chin bar to drop.

When the chin bar goes down, you are for a second without seeing anything and in traffic, it is really dangerous.

Out of town, and at higher speeds, the chin bar creates a catch in the wind, with pressure back. To be formally advised against therefore.

It closes easily with one hand, even when driving (test carried out regularly but not recommended for obvious safety reasons).

Closed position

Once the chin bar is lowered, the helmet is even quieter. No wonder in absolute terms compared to the open position. On the other hand, the C2 is much quieter than many A-class cars..

The ventilation system is quite efficient. You can feel the air streams generated both by the front air intake and the one placed on the top of the head. On the other hand, at high speed, these air intakes make the helmet a little more noisy, while remaining particularly soundproof.

The sun screen is a real plus. With a little practice, you can quickly put it on and take it off with one hand. It descends just below the eyes, therefore mostly suppressing the sun coming from above, without preventing us from seeing meter and below. It does not have the same quality as sunglasses and decreases visibility through the visor a bit due to its additional screen, especially since it is quite dark. But it is a real security, especially in cases where you suddenly find yourself around a bend in direct sunlight.

Note that the sun visor is available in two shades: 80% gray tinted, anti-condensation coating (standard) and 60% brown tint, anti-condensation coating (optional).

At high speed, the headphones become noisier. Over several hundred kilometers, therefore, it does not exempt you from putting on earplugs. In fact, everything will depend above all on the motorcycle and in particular on the bubble of the said motorcycle. At equal speed, the C2 is, for example, more noisy on an FJR 1300 than on a CBF 1000, which however has a lower bubble. However, it only allows 86.5 dB (A) to pass at 100 km / h, which is very low for the category..

Well balanced, the shape of the helmet is well designed, limiting the effect of the extra weight on the neck. At 400 g more than many integrals, the difference in fatigue on the neck is noticeable but relatively small. It even allows high speed side checks to be done more easily than some A-class ones..

Rain

The interior anti-fog treatment of the visor is very effective, almost as much as a pinlock system.

On the outside, however, the rain seems to stick to the visor and does not drain well. On some helmets, in the event of rain, driving at more than 100 km / h (not in town) allows the rain to escape well; but with the C2, driving fast doesn’t change anything. The speed must then be reduced very significantly. Using the RainX does not change the problem at all.

The treatment, on the other hand, is very fragile. Having tried to clean the inside of the visor with paper found at a gas station to wipe his hands, the treatment was started. The few cuts deteriorated and required meticulously removing for more than half an hour all the treatment which turns out to be a very thin plastic film. The visor is not scratched internally, however, the treatment is destroyed. As a result, mist forms very, very easily indoors in rainy weather. This demonstrates its extreme effectiveness against fogging but also its fragility: it is better to use a cloth for glasses and not to trust any paper towel..

Conclusion

After 7,000 kilometers, the first impressions cannot be denied. The foams have just taken the shape of the face but without settling to let the helmet move. Everything remains particularly comfortable and soundproof.

In the end, the helmet holds up well over time, without losing its qualities..

Warning ! The C3 is already announced, lighter, even more soundproof and including Pinlock as standard! There are therefore current promotions on the latest C2.
