Those who flirt at speed are now on very thin ice. That is evolutionarily absurd and holistically duplicitous – or?

Uwe Seitz

“Cause I got speed inside my brain”, shouts Ian Gillan from Deep Purple in the hard rock classic “Highwaystar” ecstatically – for the first time in 1971. Back then you could still show off the desire for speed. That spoke from the heart of the motorized youth, it was pure freedom and masculine too. The masses nodded their heads rhythmically – boundless approval.

With this unbridled joy in accelerating, the Deep Purple frontman is part of a long tradition, at the beginning of which people strived for speed above their running pace. No sooner had the wheel been invented than he hitched all sorts of animals to the cart, which should not only pull it out of the dirt, but above all quickly from A to B. Top speed was immediately an issue, and people soon roared with enthusiasm on Roman racetracks.

Many see speed as a problem per se

For a long time, however, the general public was not allowed to even take part in the speed hunt. Only with the invention of the railroad did the mass phenomenon “speed” really get going. And then there were warnings. Even if the often-quoted warning of the “Bavarian Medical Board” from 1835 against a brain disease in such fast travelers certainly belongs in the realm of myths – the authority never existed. No sooner did people get the chance to advance faster than the average could stumble along when there was grumbling.

Today we experience the peak of the raised index fingers. Everywhere there are commands, warnings and warnings. Those who only use the word “speed” either have no conscience or are coming dangerously close to illegality. We prefer not to speak of masculinity at all here. Many people see speed as a problem per se, because they have lost perspective due to mega security campaigns, Rupel-Rolf, sensation-hungry TV reports and authoritarian rule madness.

Why are we so keen on speed?

Slow is not safe either

Speed immediately turns to lawn, according to the motto: If the other is too fast for you, this one is a speeder. Is that why Speedy Gonzales is no longer shown in the children’s program? Our little ones might notice that it is damn fun to be fast.

Nobody has demonstrated more impressively than our Chancellor that “slow” is by no means certain. “We are assuming low speed,” said government spokesman Seibert when asked about the circumstances of Merkel’s skiing accident. Perhaps the Federal Ministry of the Interior will soon warn against cross-country skiing that is too slow – risk of pelvic breakage!

Everyday frenzy costs human lives

The paradox of the general hostility to speed is that the world we live in has accelerated insanely. In the digital age, life races past us, we have to do more and more things faster and faster in order not to be left behind in everyday life. No anti-Schnellverband warns of this, no ministry fights against it with awareness-raising campaigns, and it does not establish in people’s minds how dangerous it is. The fact that this frenzy of everyday life costs human lives is only mentioned in passing.

The English writer Edward Young once wrote: “Wasted time is existence, wasted time is life”. There wasn’t even the railroad. But it hits the bottom line. There is negative speed – imposed from outside as a mere existence and functioning.

Escape is a healing method to escape the hamster wheel: put on a helmet and quickly drive a motorcycle. Anyone who encounters the hustle and bustle with speed lives their freedom. Politically correct or not – with the right measure it is extremely healthy: “Cause I got speed inside my brain”.
