It is arguably the most versatile Harley. And the one that all Harleyists want to have in their hands when it comes to having fun or going for an unexpected ride with the big twin of the house. It was also born for that in 77, in order to be a bit the agitator of the sector. The task is less obvious today but the spirit is still there. Well almost, because the Low Rider has changed family.

A Softail now. She had no choice: the Dyna frame, on which she was resting, went by the wayside. The pure will have the feeling of swallowing a coconut to accept this change. Technically, it’s all good. The chassis in question is largely overhauled. False Hardtail of course, with a simplified frame requiring fewer parts and welds. Its rigidity is very clearly superior: much more than the old Softail frame, much more than the Dyna. With a new mono-shock absorber placed under the saddle (thus invisible) and a fork of better invoice, the part-cycle of the Low Rider should largely gain in efficiency..
Except perhaps at the braking level. Strangely, a brake disc has disappeared at the front. Would the machine dare to trust her weight loss? Beware of optimism. She has certainly lost 9 kilos since the previous generation, but there are still 287 kilograms dry on the scale. The Low Rider ignores that – it claims to be faster and can take turns in ways you can’t imagine. All is said !

No not all. Because there remains the centerpiece, the engine. And what a block. The M8, the one that will have replaced the Twin Cam in less than two years. Harley-Davidson was much faster than usual to install its latest Big Block in all of its heavy-caliber models. The Milwaukee Eight is, remember, a 1745 cc with 8 valves and 4 spark plugs in all. Plus a balancing arm to greatly reduce vibrations at idle. Its strength is developed in the cannons of the mark, with 2 mkg of gained compared to the old engine. Almost enough to compete with the ex and vigorous 1800 Low Rider S and its Scream’in Eagle engine. Still full of character but less rough in use, this V-twin fits perfectly with the spirit of the new Low Rider.
Among the peripherals that score, the Shotgun 2-into-2 silencer reinforces guidelines as the wheels now consist of ‘Radiate’ rims; still 19 inches at the front but 16 inches at the back.

Although it has changed significantly technically, the Softail Low Rider does everything to stay true to its purpose. Welcomed into a new family, it will not take long for her to be accepted by her sisters as well as by her audience, which should find its account even more than before..
