Honda SilverWing scooter test

Menus

Honda SilverWingthe
SilverWing 600 is no longer a Vespa type scooter
or Piaggio but it’s not a motorcycle either. It’s a big scooter
50 hp 4T twin-cylinder equipped with electronic fuel injection,
liquid cooling, brake distribution and a
catalyzed exhaust.

What surprises me, however, is that on the road everyone
the bikers give me a lighthouse call and this is due I am thinking of
its massive appearance (double vertical headlight + double position lights) but
again to the fact that I raised the saddle by 5cm and that I
therefore dominates the situation a little. Added to the nice noise of the 2 cylinders
and the generous "behind" topped
a double red light.

In the saddle

Getting on it is obviously no problem for
because of the very low central level. We can step over it with
his leathers but also in a tuxedo with Loden. In the event of a problem
the ejection is done without problem (experience
lived!).

Sitting :

Coming from a motorbike, I hate the sit-down position.
on a chair ". From then on I took off my backsplash
and raised the saddle by 5cm. Result: I am slightly
leaned on my handlebars and I found a certain weight in bends
on the front wheel necessary for a good balance of
curve. Better insurance also at high speed
and safety during road anomalies.

Contact

Honda SilverWingAbove
I have already given you some impressions. The start
does not pose a problem and the noise in all circumstances is
really felted. It is true that we would like to hear
a little better the exhaust. Is there on the market
pots in this direction ?

Personally, I have a very
positive: good heading, real comfort in all circumstances,
no parasitic currents.

I do not share the opinion of certain critics who find it a
certain softness. For me it’s a bike all of one
block.

In the city

Relatively light Royal car, automatic gearbox and full width
which still allows to sneak. Fearsome at start-up, it slows down
very strong in catamaran. Large chest (+ an occasional Givi) to do
all the necessary groceries (even a bin of beer
!).

On the road

This machine defends itself as well in the city as on the road. On
the national overtaking, because of the CVT, are not
not the most frank. On the other hand, it turns deliciously on
departmental.

On the highway

My previous scooter was a Suzuki Burgman 400
which with its only cylinder of 34CV was barely on
highway. The Silver Wing brought me exactly the little supplement
necessary. The top speed difference (160 instead
140 stopwatch) gives me an otherwise pleasant pace
towards 125/135 Km / h. Comfort also very high with
the large Givi screen. Cadence barely started by
heavy rain. At this pace, overtaking is still relatively
well-off.

Duo

Unfortunately, I can’t tell you anything because I don’t want to ride in
duo. Excess weight leads to an uncontrollable side
on the rear and therefore a certain danger. But there is for
the passenger a very comfortable saddle, good footrests and
good grab handles.

Braking and tires

Honda SilverWingWe
can buy ABS (after dual CBS) but I don’t
do not want. Moreover, the right handle is already controlling
a 70/30 split and that suits me in most
case. The left handle ends the maneuver.

The original tires are Japanese and give no problem
even in humid weather. I changed the back
at 10,000 and the front at 20,000Km.

Reviews, agencies and consumption

Honda defends itself well on the market and the seriousness
of its agents is insured. I had to re-enter my machine
for two small odds and ends at the factory’s expense (crutch bolt
central and steering part) and I complained about a
clutch that heckles. But over time it gets better and basically
it does no harm. One could however require that this problem
be resolved.

In terms of consumption, you should know that this engine runs fast (6000
at 140Km / h) and therefore at 140 we will note 8 l./100 while in
country road at 60/70 we go down to 5 liters!

Conclusion

I don’t have any friends who have them. Here in Antwerp
there may be around thirty of them, which is not much. Of a
apart from these big scooters are an event, a new deal
in the world of motorcycles.

Honda SilverWingThis is
Suzuki who paved the way with his Burgman, addressing himself earlier
to scooter riders who were on their hunger at the level
comfort and performance, sometimes to former bikers
who like me want a less nasty, less heavy frame,
well stocked. It is true that in time I crossed with
my 100RS around 160/170. This time is over, there are too many
traffic and administration forcibly brings us back to
more wisdom. That said, I find that the size of my Silver Wing
is a limit. With its width of 88cm it goes most often where
other bikers no longer pass. I voluntarily refused
the Burgman 650 because it had an extra width with its two mirrors
of 15cm. That’s all the difference (in town).

The wheels are also at the limit when you have
for example cobblestones! Instead of 14/13 I want 15/14.
Distress flashers are sorely lacking (which I have
done put). Finally side bumpers would come to
point (cfr Aprilia Atlantic) because it has already happened to me
to lose control of my machine when it is stopped
and that it lies down on the road.

Strong points Weak points
  • Motor
  • Handy
  • Duo comfort
  • Darting in duet
  • Lack of side protection

Competitors: Aprilia 500 Atlantic, Piaggio 500X9, Suzuki Burgman 650,
Yamaha 500 T-Max
