Second-hand advice: Honda Transalp
The Honda Transalp as a used one

No beauty, others are adored, and she doesn’t want to be a revolutionary either. Nevertheless, the bourgeois Honda attracts many fans who think alternatively. Because it still conveys real ideals.

Against arms madness, against luxury consumption. For more environmental compatibility. Yes to a simple and humble (motorcycle) life. No to aggression on the street. Peace! And if it does get stressful: just get away, get out of everyday life, into nature, on to other cultures! For that, 50 to 60 hp are always enough. Take a seat in comfort, maybe take a comrade with you, the large tank makes escape stages of over 300 kilometers non-stop possible. the Transalp is a motorhome par excellence: extremely reliable, economical, easy to use, never overwhelming. Nevertheless, it is agile and has a stable track, so that a road still has to be invented that the extremely broadband road enduro could not cope with. But even without an asphalt surface, it gets along well, 18 centimeters of suspension travel help at least to master gravel roads and passes with ease. For over a quarter of a century, the “Transe” has been proving that it is not individual top values, but a coherent overall package that make a successful model (over 36,000 sold). The latest generation of injection engines (from 2008) with 60 hp, great suspension and the best brakes is the superior one in the family duel, but leaves the older 600 and 650 sisters at most within sight. The “oldies” can still keep up, and those interested in knowing do not shy away from odometer readings beyond 50,000 kilometers – a sign of the leap of faith in a motorcycle that has never neglected its intrinsic values for generations. A thoroughly honest guy – ideal.

Naive to believe that with almost six-figure mileage, there is no stress. Even the extremely durable 600 V2 needs an overhaul at some point (valves, pistons, etc.) – and then it becomes expensive and annoying for non-screwdrivers. And annoyances such as defective ignition boxes (especially on models up to 1993) or leaky fork seals are not uncommon in older models and turn the relevant savings offer into an expensive “old one”. Rust on the frame (not uncommon in the models made in Italy) is difficult to get rid of (blasting and painting), but can be accepted as a visual defect with very cheap offers. The engine should be tight (look for traces of oil) and not ring or rattle. Inquire about the original or replacement engine. For newer machines (from year of construction 2000) with lower mileage (up to 30,000 kilometers), the condition of wear parts and the accessories (case, aluminum engine protection, main stand, etc.) determine the price.

Market situation
“Ur-Transen” are popular with lovers, but cost intact from first hand up to 2000 euros. Scratched PD06 models with minor technical defects can be found as pure utility machines for less than 1,000 euros (mostly with well over 50,000 kilometers). More recommendable: less stressed and well-maintained 600s from Japanese production (up to 1996) for 2000 euros or, for about a thousand more, a decent 650s (from 2000) with around 30,000 kilometers. Good used 700s (from 2008) are on offer from 4500 euros, new demonstrators with a maximum of 3000 kilometers cost from 6500, virgin imported vehicles and previous year’s models with daily registrations for 7000 euros. Tip: ABS models are considered to be more stable in value.
