Honda VFR 750 F RC 24 1988

Following Suzuki’s upheaval with its GSX-R, Honda was expected to respond with a muscular and manly machine. And there, it was a surprise that the discovery of this all new VFR 750. It is not a surface-to-surface race replica missile but a beautiful, elegant, and almost shy sport.. A motorcycle that wants to replace the VF-F but not only. This discreet and charming line allows it to expand its clientele beyond the clan of pure sports, and its dynamic qualities also make it a formidable machine with breathtaking performance..

Tease, it’s a motorcycle in an evening dress that hides alluring mechanical underwear. The HRC exerts its influence even in road machines and it can be guessed. The perimeter frame is particularly reminiscent of that of the RVF, with its aluminum structure which connects the steering column and anchor plates in an aluminum foundry. The swingarm, also in aluminum, is classic in appearance. The arms race and the innovation would have almost made us hope for a moment for a single-sided arm…. What attracts the most attention is obviously its engine. From the VF-F but deeply revised, this V4 is a little marvel. Its distribution is now ensured by a cascade of pinions, as on the VF 1000 R. The admission has been revised, with straighter pipes and 34 mm (+ 2 mm) carbs. The engine has also been the subject of a big hunt for weight, a modification of the crankshaft timing (it goes from 360 to 180 °), the addition of a sixth gearbox and the desire to ‘extensive general optimization. Thus, the engine is not only lighter but also more powerful, more accessible mechanically and more reliable. Created with great care, the VFR is a successful motorcycle, developing 15 hp more than the VF-F for around twenty pounds less. How does it compare to the competition of 3/4 liter? Exactly halfway between a Yamaha FZ and a Suzuki GSX-R. In use, the seats are not really the same.

What amazes the most about this new Honda is its ease and adaptability for the urban environment. Not only is its mill of an admirable flexibility but it strolls in town in a superb way. Nothing to say, neither on its evolutions, nor on the driving position. Much more natural than one might expect, and even better than on most sports cars, it allows the pilot to be completely at ease. A motorcycle like this in the city, it’s not every day that you see.
Very available, the engine is a welcome docility and more than appreciable to squeeze between buildings and cars. This does not mean that it is a lymphatic. For a 750, this block has a surprising range of use. Available from 4000 rpm, it combines progressiveness and power up to 11,000 rpm, ie 7,000 usable rpm. The thrust is done without downtime, without overflowing the pilot, making it possible to better promote traction and the use of the boiler. Yes but here it is … If its power curve is rather well rounded, this polishing does not really offer character to the V4. Of course, there is the noise, which at times recalls that of some Italian twins. The Honda engine is inspiring in its availability and even outclasses the competition in its performance – it lacks just a grain of madness to get drunk, and a little more promptness in gear changes. On the other hand, on a lap, she is always in front of.
And it’s even better in terms of handling. We already knew that the VFR was handled with disconcerting ease; it shows itself to be of royal security. We can take out the big attack, try to put it under strong stress, take big curves at the speed of sound … the Honda does not flinch with an eyebrow. And even in the event of a surprise, the bike always leaves room to improvise a saving exit. Do you want to play with it? She is the first to ask for it.
The only criticism that we can make with this new 750 sport (apart from its lack of character), it is on the set of suspensions. This does not badly affect handling, but it bumps on small bumps, it can move on big ones, and above all, it ruins comfort. Be careful, this is not a piece of wood, but it is not in tune with the machine. In front of so much talent and homogeneity, one thought to pilot a sportswoman doubled of a flying carpet. It’s okay but we expected better. Do you think I’m quibbling? It’s possible. It’s time to hide behind the bubble, protected by an efficient fairing just enough.

We imagined a sports car to unbolt the GSX-R – Honda offers us a bike that will do even better. Efficiency, ease, versatility, all this concentrated in an elegant machine, both playful and serious, and above all very versatile … The VFR 750 should make a pretty reputation.

N.D.L.R: The rest, you know it. The VFR has become one of the most formidable sport-GTs in motorcycle history. However, it is only with the next generation that it will gain its true identity, in particular with the appearance of the single-sided arm..
