2019 Honda CRF 250 R

In 2018, the CRF 250 R took an important step forward by inheriting the “Absolute Holeshot” philosophy of the 2017 CRF 450 R. Thanks to a 7th generation frame, revised geometry and suspension, but also a brand new engine. Dual ACT, the CRF250R did more than demonstrate its potential in the hands of official Honda riders.

In MX2, resting on your laurels is not an option and staying ahead is more difficult year after year. This is why for 2019, barely a year after a complete overhaul, the CRF 250 R has already received several upgrades both in terms of the engine and the chassis, further improving its efficiency, driver comfort and braking qualities..

The torque curve of the CRF 250 R receives a serious boost at low revs while the rider now has a three-mode start assist system directly inherited from the HRC. New front brake caliper, new adjustable Renthal Fatbar handlebars and black DID rims complete the list of upgrades for 2019.

Its main characteristics:

At this stage of development, the goal for the CRF 250 R was to optimize these low-end torque values so as to save time when getting out of slow corners. This goal was achieved by reworking the intake line, from the throttle body to the exhaust..

Reliability has been further improved while a 3-mode Launch Control system, directly inspired by that used by the HRC, has been installed to help the pilot – whether beginner or expert – to instantly get out of the starting grid.

The Showa frame and suspensions remain unchanged, but a new front brake caliper improves performance while the Renthal Fatbars handlebars are now standard equipment. DID rims also feature a new black finish.

In detail, the Honda CRF 250 R:

Motorization

The important point for the engine manufacturers in charge of the development of the 2019 CRF 250 R was to maintain the impressive power of their engine in revs but also, at the same time, to optimize the torque at low revs so that the bike still stands out. better on tight turns.

The objective was achieved at the cost of a number of changes, starting with an intake body slightly smaller in diameter (-2 mm to 44 mm) in order to accelerate the gas stream at low speeds. The exhaust intake ducts have been redesigned while the closing profile of the exhaust cam has been reduced by 2 ° to improve torque. The exhaust silencer on the right side is also 50 mm shorter, which ensures that power is maintained at high speeds. Finally, a slight decrease in the power of the alternator makes it possible to further limit the inertia of the engine..

The basic bore and stroke dimensions remain fixed at 79 x 50.9 mm with a cylinder offset of 4.5 mm to reduce friction. The compression ratio is also unchanged at 13.9 to 1. The valves, whose springs display an oval section, are made of titanium, of ø 33 mm on admission and ø 26mm at the exhaust with 10.5mm lift at the intake and 9.5mm at the exhaust. The angle between the valves remains fixed at 20.5 °.

In terms of food, the intake valves benefit from 2 vertical symmetrical ducts which are now shorter to improve responsiveness at high speeds.

The piston, which receives reinforcements in the form of partitioning, converts the pressure resulting from the combustion of the mixture even more efficiently into pure power. On this 2019 vintage, an oil nozzle with five nozzles replaces the previous model with 4 nozzles in order to optimize the cooling of the piston. The ignition maps have also been reworked.

The oil pump limits friction as well as losses by pumping effect at high speed by evacuating air and oil from the crankcases and maintaining negative pressure there. Engine oil, with a total volume of 1300 cc, also lubricates the clutch and gearbox..

The primary gear (which drives the oil pump), the filter as well as the oil pipes are placed on the right side of the engine, which allows the lubrication circuit to be shorter and more direct. Thus, the lubrication of the distribution now passes through the cylinder head and then through the interior of the intake and exhaust camshafts, directly lubricating the contact surface between the rocker and the valve stem..

As for the transmission, the 5-speed gearbox results in a final drive ratio of 13 x 48.

The ignition switch as well as the EMSB (Engine Mode Select Button) map selector are integrated in a small comodo placed to the left of the handlebars.

New for 2019, the “Launch Control” departure aid system developed by the HRC allows pilots to choose from three departure modes.
– 3/8 250 rpm mode, especially intended for beginners and / or muddy conditions
– 2 / 8,500 rpm mode, intended for proficient pilots and dry terrain
– 1/9500 rpm mode, intended for expert pilots and dry terrain

The activation of the “Launch Control” system is simple since it suffices to activate the clutch and press the starter button. A light diode will flash once to indicate that mode 1 is active. If the starter button is pushed a second time for 0.5 seconds or more, the diode will flash twice to indicate that mode 2 is engaged. Press again and the diode will indicate that mode 3 has been chosen.

At the same time, the EMSB (Engine Mode Select Button) map selector can be used to intervene on the characteristics of the engine. 3 maps are available to meet the pilot’s preferences and driving conditions: Mode 1 (Standard), Mode 2 (Soft) and Mode 3 (Aggressive). The same light diode also informs the pilot on the selected mode. Modes 2 and 3 can be configured using the program and the HRC tool available in Honda networks.

Cycle part

Like the engine, the chassis of the 2019 CRF250R has also been improved, particularly in terms of the performance of the braking system; thus, as on the CRF 450 R 2019, the caliper is of a new type, lighter, with pistons of ø 27 and 30 mm against 2 x 27 mm in the past. This evolution, added to the adoption of a new hose with a low expansion rate, improves the feeling when braking and keeps the power constant..
This new caliper acts on a petal disc of ø 260 mm supplemented at the rear by a disc of ø 240 mm with single piston caliper.

The Renthal Fatbar handlebars help reduce steering weight while increasing rider comfort thanks to its flexibility. The triple clamp is designed so that the handlebar brackets can be moved 26mm forward or back. When the brackets are rotated 180 °, the handlebars have an additional 10mm of latitude, bringing the number of positions available to the rider to 4.

Caster angle and drag are set at 27.5 ° / 116mm while the wheelbase is 1,486mm. Curb weight is 107.8 kg.

The Showa inverted fork ø 49mm spring loaded is simply a version of the Showa factory kit supplied to official Japanese MX Championship teams. The main trigger cartridge has a diameter of 25 mm, the ø 14mm while the secondary cartridge for compression management is a 39mm model. The Showa rear shock is fully adjustable.

DID aluminum rims (21 x 1.6 at the front and 19 x 1.85 at the rear) now benefit from black anodization. Both are fitted with Dunlop GEOMAX MX3Sde80 / 100-21 and 100 / 90-19 compounds.

The new CRF 250R receives a 6.3 l titanium fuel tank, the shape of which, together with that of the trim elements, allows the rider to move easily on the machine while the narrowness of the front section and the shape front fender directs air more efficiently to the radiator.

The decoration of the cladding is directly integrated into the plastic elements, which makes it possible to have a high resistance to friction.

Finally, the engine guard as well as the fork protection elements have been redesigned, the first to facilitate engine cooling, the second to reduce possible damage in the event of an impact..
