New naked bikes

Stefan Pierer announced it: Husqvarna will hit the road with a decent range of models. The MOTORRAD Erlkonigjager drove three well-developed new naked bikes in front of the lens.

The eventful history of Husqvarna is finally taking a positive turn after the disasters of recent years. What BMW tried in vain, namely to help the battered brand regain its shine, is now tackled by KTM boss Stefan Pierer. He bought Husqvarna BMW without further ado, closed the production facilities in Varese in northern Italy and moved the entire brand to Mattighofen. More and more new types are now being developed on the basis of KTM, which will gradually make Husqvarna a major brand in the European motorcycle business.

Make no mistake: Despite the partly identical technical basis, Husqvarna should appear very independent. Which is why a very independent path is taken when it comes to design. And that despite the fact that mastermind Gerald Kiska is the same designer behind the Husqvarna look as with KTM.

Vitpilen 701 with spartan equipment

The new line was shown for the first time at the 2014 Milan trade fair. The two studies Svartpilen 401 and Vitpilen 401 delighted the audience at the time, which spontaneously applauded. Last year, Husqvarna presented the Vitpilen 701 as another vision of the future as a spectacular study. Our Erlkonig photographer recently drove these two and also the new 125 in front of the lens. The close relationship with KTM is immediately apparent. The engine and exhaust system of the 701 come from the very successful KTM Duke 690. Its 75 hp engine, now equipped with two balance shafts, impresses not only with previously unknown performance data for a single cylinder, but also with a comparatively decent smoothness. Together with the not exactly huge tank, a strikingly spartan equipment with single-disc brake, mini dashboard and small lamps, the Vitpilen 701 will hardly weigh more than 160 kilograms with a full tank. That is a fantastic figure and makes the Austrian with Swedish roots one of the lightest muggers of the next few years.

As with the KTM, the Husqvarna also uses a rear frame cast from aluminum. This, however, with a modified shape. Very characteristic of the new Husqvarna line: the low tank with the two flat bulges. In the future, all new Husqvarna road machines will probably have this optical character trait. It could be seen on the recently photographed Vitpilen 1301 with the super-powerful V2 engine of the Superduke 1290 R as well as on the three other smaller machines.

Vitpilen 125 with wire spoke wheels

In contrast to KTM, the new Husqvarna carry the handlebars lower. This makes the seating position appear more gathered and more front-wheel-oriented on the slender street athletes. In general, the Husqvarna model range is visually much more clearly designed for road use than its KTM sisters. In Mattighofen, people are probably still very aware of how difficult it was for KTM to get away from the terrain and onto the asphalt.

The two smaller machines are the Vitpilen 401 and its 125cc sister. It comes with pretty wire-spoke wheels. A variant that the young bikers will like. The basis here will be the KTM Duke 125, while the Vitpilen 401 is based on the 390 Duke, whose 42 hp engine ensures quick progress. In terms of weight, the 401 will be around 150 kilograms, which promises sufficient driving dynamics.

News from KTM: Duke 500, Adventure 800

Photographers have often caught the new KTM two-cylinder in-line engine. However, this one is special, because it is probably not the expected KTM 800 Duke, but a smaller displacement variant, as Stefan Pierer has already announced for the Asian market. But even here in Germany, a cheaper variant with less high-quality brakes and attachments would definitely make sense.

One thing is clear: the new drive unit is part of a modular system. First, blurry photos of the eagerly awaited new 800cc travel enduro on the left. The development is not yet complete. But rumors say: The new series will start on sale in June 2017. So you will almost certainly see the first machine at EICMA.
