The Indian Chief Vintage rolls through history. A touch of imagination takes you to the plains of Arizona, where warriors and horses still gallop in memories of the land. With its large tan-colored leather saddlebags, its stout engine and style worthy of a great cavalry, would the Chief Vintage be imbued with the spirit of the Apaches of yesteryear? ?!?

Before we think back to the days of yesteryear, let’s see what the present brings in technology to move towards the future. Unimaginable if only yesterday on an American custom, here is that the electronics dictate its character to a mechanical Massachusetts. Three ! Yes, three injection maps allow the temperament of the Thunderstroke twin to be modulated. Supple, usual or tense, character becomes à la carte.
As with any good big machine, you can feel the heat at times. In front of a red light in full dodger, that reminds you of something?!? Since 2019, the Thunderstroke 111 ci can cut its rear cylinder in order to calm the heat waves. Based on the Chief Classic, the Vintage is more widely equipped to blend into an old school episode. The hips are weighted with the aforementioned saddlebags, a large removable windshield comes to rest on the headlight tribe, and what to say about this magnificent leather upholstery. A real western motorcycle.

Before leaving the handlebars to Cole Younger or Jack Mc Call, let’s be transported to the West to the rhythm of the big 1811 cc twin. He can have 15.3 mkg to lift the 379 kilos of the Indian. It smells like bison in the cast aluminum frame; and it is impossible to look away from this enormous mechanism. We forget (especially since they are well hidden) the 4-piston brake calipers around 300 mm discs. The rear brake has the same wafer diameter but a 2-piston caliper; all this supported by a standard ABS. The Indian Chief Vintage, like the rest of the range, is equipped with a 20.8 liter tank, a 6-speed gearbox complete with a belt transmission, a 46 mm fork, a regulator speed and keyless start system.
We appreciate the spoked rims, the white-walled tires, the Native American cap on the front fender, the large on-board console with its large needle counter, its shiny chrome and its typical long skirts. We like less the salty price … which must however be put into perspective. The previous edition of Chief Vintage, equipped with the PowerPlus 105 engine, claimed almost 40,000 euros. Today, we are down under 27,000. At that price, there is no room for the Winchester, but a hell of a good dose of passion and a true American icon..
