Big motorcycle meeting

The Intermot 2012, which came to an end, was a big motorcycle festival. Everything of standing and name was represented and the visitors streamed through the halls en masse.

Ralf Schneider

10/11/2012

Stands in all sizes, colors and configurations. Staged or simply occupied with imaginative structures and elaborate light and sound technology. Daily polished works of art of motorcycle construction or down-to-earth accessories presented as exhibits, daily spruced up models as eye-catchers or objective conversation partners – they form one side of a trade fair, its representative foreground.
But exciting things are also happening in the background. For example, an indirect exchange of blows between Honda and KTM, which is really meant seriously. KTM managing director Stefan Pierer had found out about the Honda works at the next Dakar rally and the mighty competitor in his
Welcome speech at the press launch of the new 1190 Adventure.
With the self-confidence of a series-
winner. It was clear to Pierer that Honda was targeting his company primarily because
the sport enduros of the Japanese fell behind compared to the EXC models of the Austrians and probably also because of the KTM successes in the Moto3 class. There the NSF 250 R and the teams driving with their engine were recently beaten several times by the KTM-powered teams. Tetsuo Suzuki, head of Honda
Racing Corporation (HRC) responded promptly to Pierer’s remark without KTM to call at all. He simply concluded his speech about the factory Honda with the
Announcement: “We will win.”Kawasaki was combative in another way. The Greens had already revealed their new models shortly before the fair and also took the initiative for the presentations. Short speeches, a groovy dance interlude, covers down – and there they were, openly presented: three Z 800 in
different paintwork. The new Kawa could already be seen in MOTORRAD 20 and 21; with those technical data that were not yet complete at the time the print editions went to press
were available, it will also be presented on www.motorradonline.de. Flashlight-
Thunderstorms, crowds, short conversations, and on? it went to the highlight of the fair’s innovations: the completely redesigned BMW R 1200 GS (see page 16).
Traditionally, trade fair presentations are at BMW motorcycle from the boss
opened, an opportunity on which the new managing director Stephan Schaller
appeared for the first time in front of a wider public in the form of many journalists from numerous countries. The figures he had to announce on the company’s development before he came to the new GS and set the stage for chief designer Edgar Heinrich was consistently pleasing and only needs a little clarification: The upswing of BMW Motorrad was not quite as steep in 2012 as before. At least he continues.
Appearance of GS: via a staircase and a sweeping ramp, three copies in different colors and equipment variants of the airy one
The hall roof was lowered, which was done by prominent drivers – rally driver Tina Meier, enduro driver Dirk Thelen and stunt world champion Christian Pfeiffer. Anyone who wanted to take a close look at the new GS immediately afterwards could use training in boxing, wrestling or American football. Everyone who had a camera in their hands pointed to it as if it wasn’t the first new one, but the last of all GSs, and defended it-
te himself with full physical effort.
The crowd at BMW also changed
Little during the visitor days, it only partially shifted to the S 1000 RR.
In addition to the banter mentioned at the beginning, it should not be forgotten that
Honda also presented the long-awaited CB 1100 (see page 20), but the new CBR 600 RR, which has also been expected, will probably be guarding until the Eicma. So does Triumph with the refreshed Daytona. Therefore
the British presented the Germans’ favorite triumph, the Street Triple, in Cologne, completely revised (page 24).
at Yamaha it was more restrained.
After all, the Japanese showed next to the modernized FJR 1300 (Page 23) a bare three-cylinder in-line engine, which was woven into a technical sculpture that symbolized a motorcycle. Speakers gave hints of a displacement of 800 to 900 cc. Like the engine shown on the MotoGP racing machine M1, the three-cylinder had a crankcase milled from solid, so it is not yet ready for series production. But whoever knew in which variants the engine still secretly existed, was deliberately silent about it. Only one informant indicated that
the complete motorcycle could already be presented in summer 2013.
Two series, one pre-series and one special model, one only slightly retouched GSX-R 1000 on the occasion of the one millionth GSX-R, Suzuki showed before Ducati with the idea of a new one Multistrada 1200 S Pikes Peak concluded the range of new products. The varying quantity and quality of the new products did not prevent a total of 203,000 visitors from flooding the stands fairly evenly. The rush by the Japanese manufacturers, who are acting rather cautiously, shows what a strong position they still have in Germany. Maybe this motivates the boss-
floors in Japan are again optimistic-
more sedate model politics.
The stand of was also well attended
MOTORCYCLE. Quite a few remained in silence in front of the ten dream bikes chosen by the readers – who knows what experiences they were recapitulating? Even more guests surrounded the showcase with the dismantled engine of the Aprilia RSV4 long-term test. No wonder, since MOTORRAD is the only magazine in the world that has such 50,000-
Carries out kilometer tests with meticulous analysis at all. The next
