Kawasaki 1400 GTR 2009

The GTR is 20 years old. Famous road from Kawasaki, this motorcycle become wise gives way to a brand new machine with a much more impressive size. Even if it means making a new sport-GT, assuming that at Kawa, we shock without taking gloves, the Greens have quite simply adapted the monstrous 1400 ZZR to travel, to design a new road liner.

A vessel competing with the BMW K 1200 GT and Yamaha 1300 FJR, with the same type of weapons, in addition to sharper, beefier, nastier, more Kawa. Already, when you see the beast, you are less clever.

A big machine with an imposing size, giving off an impression of strength and tenacity more than respectable. Under the fairing panels specific to this GTR (and certainly more protective than those of the ZZR), the soul of the large 200 hp surface-to-surface missile slumbers. Same aluminum frame-hull, inverted fork and radial braking system … It’s still quite a bit of gear for a sport-GT. The equipment with which this “Supersport Transcontinentale” is equipped gives ideas on the claims of this vessel: gimbal transmission, standard ABS, 12 V socket, stylish, rigid and removable bags, glove box on the tank … and also elements on which we will dwell a little more: VVT engine distribution system, tire pressure control, KIPASS starting system and electrically adjustable windscreen.

And to cut down a kilometer, the same large 1352 cm3 mill. Engine manufacturers reduced it to 155 horsepower and 13.9 mkg. Values that allow it to outclass the K 1200 GT and become the most powerful new cruiser in grand touring. But more than the power, it is above all the tremendous availability of this engine that will delight long-haul travelers. And how to get even more torque and more pleasure at mid-range. A special feature: the boiler is equipped with a variable valve timing system. A process aimed at optimizing the torque according to the speed. Honda tried it with its VFR V-Tec, with mixed success. Will the Kawa process be similar or more extensive like the continuously variable system of certain car engines (BMW, Porsche) ?

VARIABLE VALVE TIMING SYSTEM

The GTR 1400 inaugurates this new variable distribution system, which allows the engine filling curves to be varied. Explanation: the VVT acts directly on the intake camshaft, over 25 ° of rotation amplitude. To do this, an oil-pressurized bell controls the camshaft. By regulating the pressure in this bell, the VVT makes it possible to optimize the behavior, the response and the engine torque; intake and valve movement are constantly adapting. The timing of intake opening is delayed at low engine speeds, reducing overall valve opening time and resulting in fuller and more efficient combustion at low engine speeds. combined with the large cubic capacity of this moulbif, the GTR will offer us sacred times and excellent power availability.

TIRE PRESSURE CHECK LIGHT

This large road is the first to be fitted as standard with a tire pressure control device. Inside each rim is a sensor which continuously measures the air pressure, and indicates it on the instrument panel (very rich in information) of the machine. If this pressure drops below a certain critical value, a signal is transmitted to the KIPASS electronic control unit. An alert message informs you of the drop in pressure and the value thereof.

KEYLESS STARTING SYSTEM

No more ignition key! Make way for the electronic card. The ignition keyless start system arrives in the world of motorcycles. In 4 wheels, this system has existed since 1999, and was also inaugurated on a large road: the Mercedes S class.
On the technical side, we will try to explain simple, despite the big mess of electronics … Before starting, pressing the switch allows the KIPASS module to communicate by radio waves with the electronic card of the motorcycle (hidden in the pocket, backpack or coffee thermos). After recognition, the KIPASS releases the electronic management of the motorcycle and you just have to start. Practical when you have just put on the rain jacket and the key is at the bottom of the trouser pocket, completely inaccessible.

ELECTRICALLY ADJUSTABLE WINDSHIELD

It is not an innovation but the adjustment of this appendage is always very appreciable, even essential on this kind of machines. That of the GTR 1400, electrically adjustable, pivots on an axis at the same time as it goes up. The air flow is thus diverted to pass directly above the helmet. Kawasaki used the “hypersport styling philosophy that forces the air mass to aerodynamically bypass the rider to reduce turbulence.” There are many references to sport in Kawa’s speech, making the new GTR a hyper-road with hypersport genes..

Like any good road devourer, the GTR has a center stand and gimbal. The one attached to this Kawa is particularly intriguing with its unique swingarm. The latter, called Tetra-Lever, is made up of 2 double articulated arms; the one on the left is connected in its center to the gimbal, showing a certain similarity with the system developed at BMW and Moto-Guzzi. Still on the transmission side, the GTR adopts as standard, like more and more hypersports, a torque limiter clutch which prevents the rear wheel from jamming when downshifting at high speed. This enables smooth entry into bends and impressive exits from bends..
For comfort, the GTR’s handles are located 96mm further back and 100mm higher than that of the ZZR, allowing for a more relaxed and upright riding position, protected by the electrically adjustable windshield. Kawa took an interest in the heat dissipated by the fairing sides and installed removable leg guards. These create an airflow around the motorcycle while drawing heat from the engine away from the rider’s legs. By moving the leg guards, the heat from the radiator can warm the legs more easily in cold weather.
For storage, each suitcase (waterproof and supplied as standard) can carry up to 10 kg of gear. A small glove box takes place on the front of the tank, and a resin luggage rack and also fitted as standard. Be careful all the same, this one accepts only 10 kgs of load – a little tight.

Kawasaki 1400 GTR 2009Would we be in the presence of a future reference of sport-GT? Kawa has worked hard to make its inter-continental cruiser a step above the competition, and possibly a technological showcase. Not to mention that the manufacturer promises us a behavior worthy of a sportswoman for this traveler with great potential. And in addition, we want to believe it so much it makes our mouths water. Marketed in July, the GTR 1400 is displayed at a little less than 16,000 euros, with a small particularity for France: the owners will benefit from a guarantee of 3 years or 100,000 kms..
