Kawasaki 1200 ZZR 2004

Menus

It is new but we recognize it immediately. Forms and curves mingle in an imposing size where the ZZR genetics endure. The myth has guided the pencil of designers who have taken a piece of Kawasaki legend into the 21st century.. We kept the good old recipes with a beefy redesigned perimeter frame, a good big 4-cylinder carburetor that gained 112 cc, watts and torque, a new look that does not betray the ZZR spirit. Classier, more imposing, the new look (which is reminiscent of that of the Triumph Trophy) seems less aggressive than that of the 1100.

Deliberate will? The 1100 was Kawa’s big sports car when it was born, the one that broke the wall of the 280s in the early 90s – Today, this role is devolved to the ZX-12 R; the ZZR is repositioned in sport-GT. In accordance with the softer lines, the driving position has become gentrified: there is less support, and the legs less curled up. This does not mean that the handling is done with confidence. It’s a big machine, and heavy. She has gained 8 kg (280 now), and with the legs more apart and the saddle raised, we move with caution. And in flexibility on the couple of the big boiler. Known and recognized, the block Kawa does not display any technological debauchery to express itself generously: big torque and sensations, that is its ambition. Those who have known the factory to the big heart of the 1100 will happily rediscover this bearded and bearish tone which enchants in the face of the blandness of the blocks, however hyper efficient of the modern era. Before mid-revs, the mill remains quiet, scraping its voice. Expressive, it pushes frankly from 4500 to 8000 revs with striking ease. Nearly 12 mkg are there to ensure hellish times. Afterwards, it spits out very large watts, which propel the ZZR like a cannonball. All in a buzz that takes the guts. It grows, it vibrates, it expresses itself, it rages, it lives! This is not a serious GSX-R VVVrrroouuiippp but a furious and angry BBBRRRVVVOOOOUUPPPPP. Even the French version benefits from this behavior at low and mid-range. Only the firepower is dampened at the top of the needle – but most of the feel is preserved. Although soft, the box is not as fast and precise as a modern selection. With its new front axle, the 1200 engages more delicately on the angle but the suspensions are somewhat lacking when the road is no longer billiards. It is necessary to bring it without brutality in the turn, then to make it take its support, and to seat it while exiting the turn by having to play with a handful of gas which lacks precision. Not to mention the heavy weight that must be held with a firm hand. The ZZR does not let itself be tamed by the first leek that comes along.

KAWASAKI 1200 ZZR His thing is more the big curves and TGV journeys. Because the protection is not badly gauled on this machine. The double curvature screen protects up to 180 km / h in very good comfort. Where the ZZR also marks time, it is on its equipment. The new dashboard gathers the same information as before, and a second partial is missing. In its moult, the Kawa loses the practical retractable lugs at the back and the storage compartment in the fairing return. Will you believe me if I tell you that switching to reserve is done manually? The passenger will be less well installed than on the 1100, sitting higher and holding on to less effective handles than the arch of fire its elder. The ZZR is not a bad bike, but it is no longer up to date. The hunt for weight is essential, the list of equipment deserves to lengthen, and the dynamic behavior must also go through the box “upgrade”. However, the 1200 has a character of thunder, increasingly rare on the 4 legs of the era Motardus Sapiens Radicalus.
