Kawasaki 900 ZX-9R 1999

35 kg less! This is diet. From a big bourgeois sportswoman (and heavy), the ZX-9R has become a light high-level hypersport. It abandons the sumptuous side of its previous version to display a slenderness sprinkled with elegance. The Ninja 900 has found the line and it shows it. Just imagine the work done by the engineers: 8.5 kg gained on the engine and more than 26 on the chassis. The frame alone melted 5 kg. With 183 kg for 143 hp, the kawasaki immediately imposes respect.

To then impose its ease of piloting. On the track as on the road, the bike is impressive in its ease. From the big carrier that was the old one, we have moved on to the ballerina full of punch and dynamism. One could have feared a lack of rigor on the new 900 because it lost in the mutation its inverted fork and its weak swinging arm. Verdict in 5 seconds: big braking in sight. Lever grip, clamping of pliers. The six-piston calipers are superb in power, generous on the bite and providing a great feeling for the rider. The chassis remains unperturbed while the suspensions are working at their best. The observation of the damping is the same on the road, proving to be rather firm but particularly effective. The ZX-9R is not far from the excellent level reached by the 900 CBR.

Engine question, however, it has nothing to do with the Honda. The 4-cylinder Kawa develops much more potato. Completely redesigned, lightened, stuffed with Ram Air and 40mm carbs, the mill buries its predecessor on all fronts. A burst of gas and the needle spurts into the top of the tachometer. This block literally seems devoid of inertia. Full and lively in low revs, it sends good watts up to 8000 revs while being lively and pleasant. Afterwards, he changes registers. The thrust strengthens (in a more linear way), the melody changes and the 9R is revealed: she has rage in her stomach. If the old one became pathetic at the approach of 10,000 rpm, the new green bomb loves to practice in high revs. Do you like the extension? It gives you up to 12,700 revs, a speed at which the breaker cuts its lyrical flights. Efficient but also remarkably flexible, the block is also distinguished by its very successful clamping. To calm it down to 100 hp, the manufacturer uses carbide caps which prevent the bushels from rising over their entire stroke. This system allows the engine to keep all its character up to 7000 rpm. Indeed, below this speed, the power and torque curves are the same on the 2 versions. On the French, once passed the 8000 revs, it is still possible to take turns but the engine is no longer so enthusiastic. The true temperament, that of the Ninja, is only found on the full power, which releases a good, big and furious cavalry in the ‘hot’ zone..

From its past as a GT-imitation sport, the machine has kept its good feelings for the rider. This one is rather well installed, sportingly but without excess.

Nothing to do with a Ducati that breaks you in two. A high-speed ride on the open road reveals the ZX-9R’s only real weakness, which is too much protection. You can cut the road without hiding up to 170-180 km / h. Beyond that, it is better to bring your helmet closer to the meters.
No big deal, we’ve already got off the highway. Flying on the tormented and quirky departmental roads, the 900 strolls, rolls up, is eaten at all speeds while driving with the end of the half-handlebars..

Too beautiful the painting? Maybe because ZX-9R deserves it. Homogeneous, easy, powerful, rigorous, this bike has risen to the level of the best fat sports cars of the moment. Hitting the brunt of the R1 like the 900 CBR, it could suffer from its wiser design than the Yamaha. The latter sweats the competition to the limit. A strong argument for a clientele that remains above all passionate. But passion, isn’t it just the soul of a Kawasaki ?
