The most versatile Ninja gets a makeover. Playful and accessible, inspiring the spirit of Kawasaki sports cars, the 650 is back on the scene with a modified face and a latest generation dashboard. Leaving the Z 650 to go sinter with the small moths in the category, it intends to enhance its sex appeal with a series of refreshing improvements.

It would be too simple to qualify it as a streamlined roadster as its silhouette shows us a sporty imitation. Oscillating between the Ninja 400 and the ZX-6R 636, its facies in turn takes on Kawa’s identity genetics. A movement that began with the H2 / H2R to continue to the top of the 1000 Versys. This bike has fangs, but its purpose is not to bite the road. It aims more at the seduction of city dwellers in the wind, carried away by their time, eager for wriggling between buildings as well as fine arsouilles when the week flies away..

The face has evolved a lot, the sides to another extent, while the tank and the rear have remained unmoved. Aesthetics are not the only beneficiary of the good offices of the manufacturer. Emphasis was placed on improving the welcome on board. To do this, the Ninja 650 receives a straighter (and lower) bubble that is supposed to better protect against the wind. The passenger is the big winner, as for his seat, with a new saddle. With 5 mm more consistency in the middle and 10 mm on the sides, the buttocks will feel a little better considered.

It is from the side of the instrumentation that Kawa released a nice card of its game. No needles or LCD but a beautiful TFT screen of 10.9 cm (4.3 inches – a little smaller than the Iphone 6). The pilot thus benefits from a high-tech aspect display, with all the information well arranged, the gear engaged and the speed clearly visible, and a bargraph to indicate the engine speed. Unfortunately, no control on the handlebars to control it.
The Ninja makes up for it with its connectivity: this panel is enriched with a Bluetooth chip. You can thus pair your smartphone and then use the ‘Rideology’ app to retrieve all kinds of information. Such as the route traveled, maintenance operations, certain notifications, etc….
This screen also thinks about visual comfort by allowing a choice between a ‘negative’ or ‘positive’ display. In addition, it adapts to ambient light.

The modifications on the part-cycle side are less abundant. The Ninja 650 retains its tubular steel section frame, with a classic 41mm fork, adjustable preload single shock and sufficient braking. Two 300 mm petal discs at the front with dual piston calipers and a 220 mm disc, also petal, pinched by a single piston. We are not in the sport but it will respond appropriately to the request. So almost nothing has changed since the previous version. The almost being the new tire, Kawa having opted for Dunlop Sportmax Roadsport 2.

The twin also announces a small update. Some alterations to the intake and exhaust allow the 649 cm3 to strengthen at mid-speed. Without reducing its maximum power capacity, perched at 68 horsepower, at 8,000 revs. The torque is still estimated at 6.7 mkg. This engine already knew how to lead its crew with playfulness, even to tease a little the velocus motardus that lies dormant in all of us. His demeanor should be preserved, with that little extra hint in the mid-grunts..

The Kawasaki Ninja 650 completes its evolution with LED eyes to boost the efficiency of its front lighting. The rear had already been enjoying it for a long time.
