Kawasaki Versys-X 300 2017

The Versys concept takes on a new version with this small displacement. The first of the name, appeared in 2007 with 650 cm3, took Kawasaki to the beginnings of the crossover. Subsequently, the 1000 entered the Trail-GT niche. The youngest comes on a land where we did not expect her. In the range of 250/300 cm3, where strive to break through small roadsters and sports (Z 300, Ninja 300, R3, MT-03, Duke 390, RC 390, etc …..)

Kawa offers a little taste of adventure, trail and road with this Versys-X 300. Thin, light, the silhouette corresponds to the engine capacity and does not try to deceive the eye. This does not prevent him from having a certain aplomb and a will of adventurer in his forms. Motorcycles do not inspire the Dakar; it smells of the countryside. And to get there with detour, the Versys-X relies on the twin cylinder already known on the small Z and Ninja.
This engine will not balk at the task. With 296 cm3, double butterfly injection, double ACT, 8 valves and liquid cooling, it offers the technique one expects from a modern engine. On the side of the air box and intake, the engineers have optimized the flow to strengthen the torque. The power of this block remains true to its pedigree, with 40 horsepower in the vilo and 2.6 mkg of torque. Good enough for the city and a few small forest getaways; too tight for a real trip. But who wants to walk far will naturally move towards larger engines.

Instinctively, the Kawasaki Versys-X 300 seems ready to face the elements of everyday life. The trio of fairing sidewalls / fork crown / screen bodes well for protection. The driving position promises to be very relaxed while a few details attest that the manufacturer has worked on the subject. The small Versys has spoked rims (style and function), a luggage rack, an exhaust placed low to leave room for small suitcases (optional) and 17 liters in the tank. With the twin’s light appetite, we expect big stages before refueling.
In the company of steel tubes to support the luggage carrier, and its possible load, the passenger will have something to hang on firmly. Not very aesthetic but functional.
The 300 Versys makes up for it elsewhere in terms of style. With a small engine spoiler, more for presentation than for efficiency, and a beautiful dashboard worthy of a higher category. The needle tachometer has the best place. The LCD display would not mismatch on the 650 or even the 1000. It provides information on the gear engaged, the speed and a multitude of data: trips, clock, engine and exterior temperature, fuel gauge, average consumption, remaining range and eco driving indicator.

Kawasaki Versys-X 300 2017

For its new Versys, Kawa designed a new steel frame. The engine is anchored in it so as to play a role in its rigidity. Designed to be slim at the rider level, it will allow the rider to be comfortable, especially when setting the foot. The rear part is reinforced to withstand off-road excursions. Besides, can this 300 walk around happily? Like any crossover, the range is limited. But its spoked wheels mounted with mixed tires will allow some pranks. With 19 inches at the front and 17 at the rear, the dimensions are not in the off-road but in the compromise.
Around this frame, we find a 41 mm fork, a Uni-Trak mono-shock, a 290 mm disc with dual-piston caliper at the front, a 220 mm disc at the rear with a single-piston caliper, and ABS to supervise delicate situations. Note that the patties are petal type; style lovers will appreciate.

Ergonomics have been placed among the concerns of the manufacturer. Riding position, large handlebars, good lever arm, good size saddle and narrowness in the center of the bike go in this direction. Too bad we can’t adjust the brake and clutch levers. The Versys-X 300 compensates with an “Assist & Slipper” clutch, for smoother control and anti-dribbling effect during heavy downshifts..

To join the Versys family, we can now learn about a small displacement, more financially accessible and with decent performance. We will be tempted to go everywhere without requiring the raids mirrored by the premium class. To complete the claims of the Versys-X 300, the accessories catalog offers hand guards, a pair of suitcases, a center stand, additional lights, a 12V socket and a few other treats..

Update September 15, 2017 / Recall campaign:

In September 2017, Kawasaki launched a recall campaign for its 2017 Versys-X 300. Vibrations could cause the tail light / brake light bulb holder to fail. This could become dislocated and therefore render the rear light inoperative. This recall concerned machines whose serial number was between JKALE300CCDA00041 To JKALE300CCDA03957. The identified owners were of course contacted to have the necessary interventions carried out..
