Kawasaki ZX-6R 600 1997

Kawasaki has always known how to develop sporty models with character, with that little extra that makes it the spiciest of the Japanese 4. Already present in the turbulent category of 600 sports with its ZZR, the brand must however battle with real little moths that are the FZR and CBR. Now too sport-GT to secure a place on this new chessboard, the ZZR will continue its career in a more road register. Revenge is ready and already lends itself to a host of promises: the ZX-6R !!!

A surname that smells of powder … a 7R cousin forged in Endurance and Superbike … modern and salient technical solutions … The Kawa does not come to amuse the gallery but to eat vibrancy and performance. The recipe: light alloy, a very low weight, an incisive geometry, and an engine that loves laps, laps, more laps.
Very compact, the new 4-cylinder 599 cm3 is more super-square than the mill of the ZZR. With dimensions of 66 x 43.8 mm, the bore of the pistons is wider by 2 mm and the stroke reduced by 2.8 mm. A desire for high speeds? Oh yeah ! And with the addition of the Twin Ram Air forced air system plus 36mm carbs, power just begs to binge with speed..
Kawa offers this mill an architecture close to 400 and 750; the distribution drive is to the right of the vilo; and the engine manufacturers have seriously tracked down internal friction. The sanction is enough to make the 6R smile: it whips with 105 horsepower in the top rope, and takes around 14,000 rpm. Morality: since the appearance of the CBR 600 and the kick of this new ZX-6R, the 600 are no longer laughing. A special anecdote for France to underline this advent of an increasingly virulent category: this medium-capacity sports car must go through the bridle box to be approved by us. You will see that one day, there will be no more 750 but just 600 and big sports cars as the technology sharpens these new missiles..
The vintage 96 improves certain parts: stiffened pistons, reinforced vilo tail, reinforced casings also and improved lubrication.

Horses, we therefore have a nice cavalcade under our elbow. But on the chassis side, will that do the trick? No need to worry. Already dynamic side, we change world compared to the ZZR. About fifteen pounds less, that causes. The ZX-6R is advertised for 182 kilos dry and 205 all wet. This places it in the featherweight category. In addition, the manufacturer has adopted an almost aggressive geometry: short wheelbase of 1415 mm, column angle stretched to 24 °, and caster of only 85 mm give it a striking liveliness. Something to make you dizzy when she squirts from one angle to another. All this hung on a new double spar frame, aluminum please. In 1996, the walls thickened by half a millimeter. And do not doubt the effectiveness of the brakes if optimism wins the right hand. At the bottom of its 41mm fork, the little Ninja has to heat up its 300mm discs with opposing 4-piston calipers. In 96, the said fork has tubes thicker by a millimeter.
Sporty but not too exclusive, the ZX-6R bends your knees with its height of footrest but does not crush the rider too much with its half-handlebars placed at a reasonable alitude. The range of possible settings allows you to refine its sportiness: the fork as the shock absorber is refined in compression, relaxation and preload. To further refine the liveliness of the chassis on the circuit without affecting the settings of the rear instrument panel, it is fitted with a system for modifying the attitude of the bike..

Kawasaki has clearly created a sports car to hit the clock, with the impertinence of a small strike that will cause concern to its neighbors. Both engine and chassis are ready to go. Too bad the rear frame cannot be dismantled and the swingarm is just as ordinary. The protection, without being catastrophic, is also sporty. We forget that when the 4-cylinder kawa makes its angry side scream and its share of sensations.
