KTM 950 Adventure 2005

Menus

KTM does nothing like everyone else. To launch a model on the market, he first baptized it in competition. If it works, we move on to large-scale production. The 950 Adventure has validated its potential on the tracks of the Dakar and other sand challenges. At the time, the KTM impresses: high, imposing, cut with a billhook, the Austrian impresses. The mechanics are poles apart from design – the almost 1-liter twin is particularly compact, trapped in a chrome-molybdenum trellis frame. Getting on board is as easy as getting on a dromedary (a little less on the 2005 version, whose suspensions have been lowered by 20 mm); everything changes once up there: the machine is narrow, and the low center of gravity gives confidence. Making U-turns with the machine is also a part of sport. Fortunately, the adventurer becomes a ballerina once on the way. The engine is impatient and likes to be teased, not missing an opportunity to leap into the red zone. The chassis follows with neutrality and ease. The balance is impeccable; all you have to do is fix your gaze on the trajectory for the motorcycle to settle down effortlessly. Agile and stable, you quickly forget its size – it must be said that it is not particularly heavy, and the masses are very well distributed. Playing is not a problem: the engine expresses itself happily, the clutch and the gearbox only stand out for their smoothness and efficiency. Suspensions are not to be outdone. Their large deflections allow you to venture out of the pool table but they are firm enough to ensure a smooth course. The comfort loses a bit there – whatever, on all types of road, the Adventure is superb in handling. The braking of the 950 speaks for itself. The double disc immediately comes into action, without brutality, preventing the fork from sinking suddenly into the asphalt. Complete equipment, a polished finish and surprisingly efficient protection (given the size of the bubble) are also part of the game. A game that will be played against the BMW R 1200 GS, queen of the segment.
