A fairly unbeatable quality / price / equipment ratio for this new Kymco

Single cylinder, 399 cm3, 35.35 hp at 7,500 rpm, 37.7 Nm at 6,050 rpm, 189 kilos dry, € 5,999 (starting price)

It’s very intrusive, but we know what’s on the wall of the Kymco designers’ room. Not posters of naked girl (although!), But photos of the Yamaha T-Max, for sure! At the same time, it’s normal, it’s the benchmark: but how can we not think of the Japanese phenomenon when we see this beautiful matte blue paint, this sharp front face, these LED lights. One thing is certain: the Kymco XCiting S 400i presents well and much better than the previous generation. And it is a major asset in this very competitive market.

We can also wonder if we are not in the presence here of one of the best shots in the world of the scooter: especially if we consider that a 400 already does a lot of service and a big " maxi-scooter "is not always necessary, even more when you look at the price. Where a Yamaha Xmax 400 is worth 6,999 euros, a BMW C400X 6,950 euros (but requires a bunch of options to be really attractive) and where Suzuki takes off with its Burgman 400 sold for 7,999 euros (sic), Kymco plays it placed with this XCiting S 400i at 5999 euros! Admittedly, this is an introductory price, which will drop to 6,299 euros after October 31, 2018. But the argument hits the mark, especially when we take stock of the content. To do this, read the eleven paragraphs that follow !

Discovery

We said it: he has the look, coco. Sharp front face, beautifully crafted matte paint (white, black or the blue of this test model are the three colors available), LED lights at the front and at the rear with a visual signature of the day, the XCiting S 400i does not miss its target.

That’s not all: we discover plenty of buttons on the stalk, for managing the on-board computer and the contents of the central meter, with digital and color display. The XCiting S 400i is modern: it allows, by loading the Noodoe application on your smartphone, to then pair it with the scooter and thus have a GPS, a customizable display of the meter, the weather forecast. , as well as when stopped only, information on his missed calls, messages and SMS. Of course, the dashboard is new and readable even in direct sunlight (this was not the case on the AK 550 and Kymco has heard those reviews).

The buttons on the stalk do not control the screen, however, because it is not electric, but manual: however handling is easy and the height range, over about fifteen centimeters, ensures good protection in the high position..

In the saddle

The saddle is perched at 810 mm but it is not too wide; thus, a certain range of sizes can therefore be found at ease on the handlebars. The same goes for the "floor" of the scooter, not too wide, which allows you to put your feet flat on the ground without having cowboy hips. Then, we appreciate the adjustable levers in four positions via a large dial. It takes a little time at the beginning to configure the central screen, but then the automatisms come and once on the way, we can only praise the clear and obvious ergonomics of the GPS, which goes to the essential; when stationary, you can scroll through other screens which show an overview of the route remaining to be covered, or some indications of the remaining driving time and the weather at the finish line. Not bad is not it ?

Practical aspects

Two storage compartments are located on the apron; they are electrically operated when the ignition is on. The one on the left has a USB socket, which charges the phone and more modern than the 12V socket found in some competitors. The saddle opens at the touch of a button on the left stalk, but there, disappointment: only its front part is discovered and do not expect to enter a full face helmet. Only a casquounet (a small helmet, therefore, probably jet), will hold it there and again. There, this is clearly a big negative point for this Kymco … when some 125 scooters like the Forza can accommodate two.

On the other hand, we will mention that the crutch on the central is of a childish simplicity: put the crutch on the ground and the machine is posed on it, without any effort. Here is an element that will simplify the life of the puny builds and the timid at the gym. The parking brake is easily activated by a trigger placed to the left of the handlebars.

Engine and transmission

The engine has changed little compared to the previous version of the XCiting 400. It develops 35.35 hp and 37.7 Nm of torque. What should be remembered, in fact, is its approval. Rather discreet, not vibrating, not having that unpleasant "gromono" effect of certain competitors, it is flexible and lively at the same time, offers good acceleration and sustained pick-ups, while the smoothness of the transmission and the beautiful finesse of the response to the throttle can be cited as an example. In short, on this point, the XCiting S 400i is a success.

In the city

The weight (189 kilos dry) is quickly forgotten and the template remains compact enough to never have the feeling of being subjected to the machine, even when you have to make your way in the jungle of the Porte Maillot, for example. Then, between the efficient engine, the nice balance and the very good turning radius, it’s nirvana. What more could you ask for: mirrors that mirror? They do it and well. A space to stick a lock: under the saddle, it will…

On motorways and main roads

Where it is allowed, the Kymco XCiting S 400i can exceed 150 km / h on the odometer: never do it, it is forbidden and terribly dangerous. Finally, dangerous, it depends: because the stability of the machine is faultless, the high bubble deflects the wind and we could cross Germany (or investigate the straight line of the Mistral at Paul Ricard) without tiring. We will therefore remember that this XCiting S 400i reveals great versatility and that its engine allows it to getaways far from overcrowded city centers..

On departmental

The handling is good, with a precise front axle and as far as we can judge in the dry, the grip of the Maxxis tires is quite satisfactory. Suddenly, the excellent revivals of the engine at speeds generally practiced on the secondary network confirm once again the beautiful provisions and the versatility of this scooter. Let’s even dare to make an assertion that makes us risk the stake of sports motorcycle enthusiasts: we can have fun with this kind of machine on small winding roads. !

Part-cycle

The XCiting S 400i has an oscillating motor and not integrated into the frame. However, this frame has been reinforced and stability does not pose any problems: scooters that waddle in a big curve around their steering column like a garland rolled up on its Christmas tree, it is a thing of the past. Then the fork is reinforced with a double triple clamp. The tires are of good size, with 120/70 x 15 at the front and 150/70 x 14 at the rear.

Brakes

No problem, it brakes hard this XCiting S 400i: double disc at the front, radial calipers and Bosch 9.1 ABS which controls it all. Suddenly, the system is adjustable, the ABS is quite transparent (we do not have the trembling of the lever on the brakes applied). In short, it’s efficient and reassuring.

Comfort and duo

Many scooters know how to break your backbone and in the past, some Kymco productions have even been zealous! Here, we can not speak of Pullman, but the rear shocks do their job correctly on small irregularities (and even on cobbled places), only large bleedings are hard felt in the bedrock. The saddle is quite comfortable, to be confirmed during a longer trip done in one go. The passenger, for his part, has nice grab handles, as well as retractable footrests that are not positioned too high..

Consumption / autonomy

We were not able to test the consumption on this test, but with 12.5 liters in the tank and a large fuel gauge, you should not run out of fuel right away. !

Conclusion

How not to succumb to such a sum of qualities: it presents well. It drives well. It offers a complete package and a level of services which are more than sufficient for a daily life, between the protection of the high screen, healthy road holding, good handling and high-level engine / transmission approval. This Kymco adds a ladle with its attractive price and its modern technology, among which the fact of having a clear and readable GPS, integrated into the dashboard (and which even balances you the indications in the helmet if you have a Bluetooth headset). ) is no small argument to switch him who has to go to dates. It really only fishes with a trunk capacity which may prove to be insufficient, if only to go out into town without being burdened with a helmet in hand..

  1. > Message to Mr. Waboo

    Dear Sir,

    The appвt therefore worked !

I wondered who was this person with the mysterious name of Waboo, who alone totaled close to half of the comments on the site’s essays..

I thought to myself that if I threw out a sincere comment (because I find no PERSONAL benefit to the Versys) but succinct enough not to fully explain the reasons, Mr. Waboo himself would probably come to "correct" me..

Dear Mr. Waboo, I have no doubt that you have the infused science of motorcycles, in between us, I don’t care. Likewise, I don’t care about bitterness or resentment, or even the feeling of superiority that drives you and pushes you to constantly give lessons to others..

I really like this site. I read with pleasure the results of the tests which are carried out there … The only downside are your incessant comments, haughty, sufficient, contemptuous, useless therefore.

Dear Sir, could you please shut up and allow other internet users the right to express themselves freely?

    thanks in advance.

    Do not reread you

  2. The forum is unique in that you can exist and feel important by asserting your truths and dogmas….

A true biker will show more open-mindedness and less smugness.

Let us therefore leave this sad sire to his sad certainties and rejoice in this beautiful end of the year rich in novelties and future pleasures….

  3. Dear Matho the Troll, because that’s what you are: a registration yesterday, 2 messages. And you even recognize it:

Since you come pourir this thread, with the aim of informing and not of trolling, and that, proof to the contrary, I only answered clearly to peremptory and unsupported assertions, I will not react to your words any more. I could be wrong about you but … in doubt.

For the rest, there are very good reasons why I actively follow the test forums. I let you search.

    Ah all the same:

Go ahead and throw out examples of "haughty, smug, contemptuous comments", …

  4. Celа says, Lorenzo, I could have been a little dry. That is true. It was to be quick on questions that seemed strange to me: kind of hesitation between a quiet motorbike at € 7,500 vs dynamic motorbike at € 10,000.

    If I displeased, I apologize.

However, my comments are well founded, believe it.
