MotoGP – Japanese GP – FP1: Dovizioso surprises Marquez and Lorenzo –

Yamaha WR 250 X and WR 250 R

New 250cc from Yamaha

In addition to the innovations already mentioned in MOTORRAD 21/2007, Yamaha has two more surprises in store for 2008: Derived from the 250cc racers YZ / WR 250 F, there are two lively sports models, the Supermoto variant WR 250 X and the Enduro WR 250 R.. Even if the degree of relationship seems to be quite high, the two newcomers are technically far removed from their roots.

Anyone who now suspects that these are simpler, inexpensive machines for beginners with reduced requirements, will quickly be taught otherwise on closer inspection. The two are extremely sporty high-tech 250 cc, fully roadworthy. Thanks to injection, catalytic converter and secondary air system, they meet tea Euro 3 standard. The cylinder heads are completely new, in which – similar to the current YZF-R1 – only four instead of five valves oscillate. The inlet valves are made of specially coated titanium, the outlet valves are made of steel. The injection works according to the downdraft principle, which brings straight intake paths. Electronically controlled flaps in the airbox and in the exhaust optimize the gas exchange, a completely new technology in this category. Furthermore, the oil supply was switched from dry to wet sump. A number of other measures are intended to increase the stability and extend the maintenance intervals. The start is only electric, the kick starter was omitted. Just over 30 hp there Yamaha as top performance, the maximum speed is over 10000 / min.

The chassis is definitely not an economy version either. Similar to the Crosser, the frame is composed of three large cast aluminum parts, but the bolted beam is made of steel. The spring elements are fully adjustable and just as high quality as in the racing versions. Elaborately built machines that promise a lot of driving pleasure with their low weight and lively engines. We can look forward to the price calculation: Despite the technical effort, the prices should be below those of the competitive models.
