Triumph Trekker GT

Traditional manufacturer presents an electric bicycle

The traditional British manufacturer Triumph presented the Trekker GT e-bike, somewhat surprisingly. We will have to wait some time for an electrically powered motorcycle.

NOToh Ducati, the next major motorcycle manufacturer is breaking new ground with Triumph and will also be offering bicycles in the future. Similar to the Ducati MIG-RR, the traditional British manufacturer also relies on an electric concept. However, the Triumph Trekker GT presented here is an electric touring bike – the Ducati bike is part of the mountain bike segment. Triumph had already announced some time ago that it wanted to deal more intensively with the topic of electromobility in the future – but only very few expected an e-bike. In May 2019 Triumph started a new project called TE-1, which aims to gain initial experience on the subject of electric motorcycles within two years. Now the British decided to start with the e-bike segment.

Range up to 145 kilometers

The bike is equipped with a 250 watt mid-engine from Shimano (E6100) and a battery with 504 Wh, which also comes from Shimano (E8035). This should allow a range of up to 145 kilometers at the lowest support level. Triumph states that the removable battery should still have 60 percent of its initial capacity after approx. 1,000 charges. The power is transmitted via a ten-speed derailleur.

Unusual: You will have to get used to the Triumph logo on bicycles.

The Triumph bike should weigh 24 kilograms. The frame was made of aluminum. Speaking of frames: The Trekker GT is offered in two different frame sizes. Otherwise, Triumph has given its first electric bike 27.5-inch wheels, LED lighting, hydraulic disc brakes from Shimano, a spring-loaded 65 mm Paragon fork from Rockshox and an attached luggage rack. The Triumph bike is to be offered in Great Britain with immediate effect, with prices starting at around 3,300 euros. In Germany, the e-bike will not be offered for the time being.

Conclusion

Although we would of course have preferred an electric motorcycle from Triumph, the British decision to enter the e-bike business is understandable. Opening up new markets, especially those that deal with electromobility, can ultimately be worthwhile.
