Where better to escape the European winter than in the southern hemisphere? Motorcycle rental companies in Australia and New Zealand are great escape workers.

When winter sets in in the northern half of the hemisphere, summer prevails in the southern hemisphere – the best time to travel to Australia or New Zealand on a motorcycle. And who has not dreamed of experiencing the vast outback of the fifth continent or the diverse landscapes of New Zealand? However, because of the horrendous costs, it is hardly worth shipping your own motorcycle for a four to six week trip or taking it with you in the belly of a jumbo. A number of companies have therefore specialized in renting motorcycles down under. In Australia or New Zealand there is also the possibility of a so-called “buy-back” (hire purchase): You buy a motorcycle with the guarantee that the dealer will buy it back after the trip for a previously negotiated price. But about that later, back to rental machines for now. Almost all rental companies in Australia and New Zealand work with German agencies. Bypassing the local travel agencies and booking directly is possible in principle, but usually does not bring any significant savings. Because the landlords grant the agencies high discounts for brokerage that private customers do not get. The customer pays almost the same price when booking directly, but forego the German-speaking advice and also has to take care of all the paperwork himself. The price for the motorcycles depends on the type class and the duration of the rental. Weekly price graduations are common with all landlords. In addition, some rental companies offer discounts of up to 20 percent during the winter season in Australia and New Zealand (May 1 to September 30). The prices given in the table should be taken into account that these are to be understood as reference values, as they depend on the current exchange rate. If you want to spend more than two months in Australia or New Zealand, you should take a close look at the buy-back offers or consider whether it is then even more profitable to ship your own motorcycle Insurance comparable to German partial and fully comprehensive insurance included. For this reason, many landlords do not even offer additional insurance, as is common in the USA, for example. Nevertheless, one should make sure beforehand which insurance protection is actually provided. A deductible between 500 and 2000 marks is required for fully comprehensive insurance without exception. It makes sense to deposit this amount by credit card. In addition to the rental fee, there are some additional costs on site. The tariffs of some rental companies only include a limited number of free kilometers per day. Every additional kilometer costs extra. Usually, however, the free kilometers are within the scope of the usual driving performance (250 free kilometers per day allow an impressive 7500 kilometers in four weeks). In addition, some landlords have to pay preparation and cleaning fees. The AMA company in Brisbane, for example, charges 60 Australian dollars (around 80 marks). Other additional services provided by the landlord, such as hotel and airport transfers or breakdown assistance, only put a slight strain on the budget, but the bottom line is that there can be a good amount of additional costs. Anyone planning to return the motorcycle to a location other than the rental station at the end of the trip must take into account when calculating the additional costs that one-way rental usually incurs high fees for the return transport. In New Zealand, around 350 marks are to be expected for repatriation between the North and South Islands; in Australia with up to 500 marks, depending on the distance to the takeover location. Occasionally, it is also possible to return the motorcycles in locations other than those listed in the table. The landlord can provide more detailed information. The prerequisite for renting the motorcycles is an (international) driving license class 1 and a certain minimum age for almost all companies. In New Zealand this is 25 years for the driver at almost all rental companies, in Australia the machines are occasionally entrusted to younger people. The agencies in Germany provide information about the relevant formalities. Almost all motorcycles are equipped with sturdy luggage racks and suitcases or saddlebags. However, if you go on tour as a couple, you should inquire about the available storage options beforehand. In addition, some companies also rent out camping equipment. An alternative to renting a motorcycle is “buy-back”. The principle is simple: you arrange to buy a motorcycle from home. This has the immense advantage that you don’t have to worry about any formalities at the travel destination. Arrive, get on, jet off. At the end of the trip, the agent buys the vehicle back at a previously agreed fixed price. However, only if the vehicle is undamaged. The company MHS in Munich even goes a step further and pays more than originally agreed if the buyback condition is very good. The costs for liability insurance must also be taken into account. Sometimes it is already included in the purchase price. Rewriting fees and the like are borne by the buyer. And mostly a brokerage fee of around 100 marks is required from the agent in Germany. In the case of a buy-back machine, in addition to the amounts mentioned above, the inspection intervals prescribed by the manufacturer must be included in the total bill. However, whether you have the service carried out yourself or settle it with a flat rate has to be clarified on a case-by-case basis. The buyer must of course pay for any damage that is independent of wear. As indicated above, the hire-purchase method is worthwhile if you travel for around two months or more. The companies that specialize in this are listed in the table, but no matter whether renting or buy-back, hopefully nobody can cut the escape route to the southern hemisphere with this information.
