In the absence of Christophe Velardi on this fourth round of the 2017 championship, the way is clear for CTM 83 driver Bruno Schiltz, who leads his KTM 1290 Superduke to victory in the rally and takes the lead of the provisional championship ! Story.

It starts first for the sighting lap, without a stopwatch, in the stages. This is a prologue during which theoretically nothing particular happens … except that there, we came close to disaster! Maxime Mettra, driver of the KTM 690 Duke 4 of the CTM83 team, is the victim of a road accident, after having completed the first special in "recce" mode.

He collided head-on with a car coming out of an intersection on a very narrow road! Fortunately, Maxime was driving at low speed at that time (around 40 km / h), but the shock was violent. Ejected over the car, Max comes out with a few bruises but the KTM 690 Duke 4 n ° 3 is bent … Maxime Mettra is therefore "out" for this fourth round of the championship.

The little tour of the prologue follows its train and ends without further hitch, then the real start of the 48th Beaujolais rally is given.

Among the competitors is a certain Julien Toniutti riding a Yamaha MT-10. Indeed, the deceitful Lyon pilot has once again found a way to lend himself a motorcycle. This time it is the friendly Yamaha dealer in Villefranche-sur-Saône, Spring Bike 69, who will put a superb MT-10 at the disposal of Julien so that he can participate (hard, as usual! ) to this magnificent Beaujolais event.

Julien will admit later that he was not at best in his sneakers at the time of the start, after this prologue lap during which he "picked up" Maxime … A little shocked following the live view of the accident , he will have trouble getting into the rhythm.

From the first special, Le Col de Saint-Bonnet, Bruno Schiltz struck hard at the controls of the KTM 1290 Superduke of the CTM83 team and took the fastest time (3’07.26). He is ahead of Laurent Filleton’s KTM 1290 Superduke by 58 hundredths while Julien Toniutti will be satisfied with the third fastest time, more than two seconds behind the fastest time..

Behind, the differences are relatively large: the first in the "Rallye 2 Tecnoglobe" category (single cylinders over 200 cc 2 stroke, over 400 cc 4 stroke, twin cylinder over 500 cc and less than 700 cc and more scooters of 125 cc), Davy Gambino (KTM 690 Duke R) is in twelfth position of the scratch, more than 14 seconds behind the first. It rolls very fast in front !

Then here is the second special of this first big loop, Pierres Plates. The finish of this special is positioned at the top of the Col de la Croix Montmain. A pass that is used to hosting rallies of all kinds, cars or motorcycles, and in particular our Beaujolais Rally a few years ago. During the 2013 edition for example, but also in 2005, during the time of Knight Sergei. But those years, those of the "good old days", the special did not take place on the same road. To climb the Croix Montmain we left Lamure sur Azergues.

The weather is capricious and the conditions change from one hour to the next, which does not a priori bother our two leaders that much since we find Laurent Filleton with the best clock (1’01.66) and Bruno Schiltz 1.8 seconds behind (1’03.46).

The third time goes here to an excellent Frederic Galtier riding his n ° 21 KTM 990 Superduke R (1,04.00). Julien Toniutti took fourth time in 1’04.70, followed by a Kevin Cheylan wound up like a clock on the handlebars of his Ducati 967 Hypermotard, which slammed a stopwatch 27 hundredths of a second behind Julien (1’04.97).

Admire in passing the time of the first of the Rallye 3 category (125 cc, single-cylinder less than 200 cc 2-stroke and less than 400 cc 4-stroke, multicylinder less than 500 cc) with Romain Cauquil (KTM 390 Duke KTM34 Suttel Motors Group) who is in seventh position of the scratch on this special with a time of 1’06.18.

The first big loop will end quietly under a few passing showers and the drivers benefit from their 15 minutes of assistance before setting off for a second lap.

At the second passage of Saint-Bonnet, nothing new for the first two compared to the first lap: Schiltz obtained the best time (by sticking however more than 6 seconds to the second, Laurent Filleton (3’25.96 against 3’32 , 08!)

But the third position goes this time to a sidecar, that of the "family" crew Chanal Gilles and Chanal C. at the controls of their original SGR Panda 1340 hitch, who slam here 3’35.69. Hats off guys !

This friendly tricycle crew did not stop at this first remarkable performance of the day and took the fastest time on the following special, that of the second passage through Pierres Plates in 1’02.12 !

Laurent Filleton gets the second fastest time (1’03.05) ahead of Julien Toniutti (1’03.26) and Kevin Cheylan, who does not let go and gets closer to Julien at 14 hundredths (1’03.40). Bruno Schiltz weakened slightly and only got the seventh fastest time (1’04.35).

The gaps are very tight this time: we find no less than twelve pilots within 3 seconds of the first, the twelfth in time (1’05.00) being obtained by the first of the Classic category, Nick Ayrton, at the controls of his inseparable Suzuki 1100 GSXR from another century !

After the assistance at the end of the second big loop, it was off again for a third lap! But even with gloomy weather, it is not a chore to travel these small roads that wind between the vines or climb passes with magnificent views, greener than the greenest minister of ecology of all. the story !

Just gazing at these lush green valleys feels like snorting a mega dose of chlorophyll and filling your lungs with it !

Jean-François Canet, pilot of the KTM 690 SMC R n ° 142, even confessed to MNC, a little ashamed, that he could not resist stopping during the course to take a photo of the landscape, it all seemed so unreal !

Julien Toniutti, the return !

On the third pass at the Col de Saint-Bonnet, the fastest Lyonnais west of Lyon has been driving with an additional safety margin since this morning, not only following Maxime’s accident but also because he has to ensure his participation in the next TT on the Isle of Man in a fortnight. Be careful my friend, Guy Martin waits for you !

However, having been champion always leaves some aftereffects, and we do not separate so easily from the best times of specials (I did it but that was a long time ago, shortly after the dinosaurs).

Julien therefore takes his MT-10 Spring Bike 69 to first place with the best time in 3’14.79. He stuck nearly 6 seconds to second, Jeremy Barnoin on KTM 990 SMT (3’20.67). The Chanal / Chanal crew of the original 1340 SGR Panda sidecar is third in 3’21.54.

The road certainly wet for the first and drying over the passages could explain the fourth time of Bruno Schiltz more than 7 seconds behind the first (3’22.06) and the twelfth time of Laurent Filleton (3’27.62), But that’s the rally, and the weather rule is the same for everyone: sometimes it’s good, others less…

In addition, a name is missing at the end of this fifth special: Pierre Reynaud, pilot of the Triumph 675 Daytona n ° 19 … Victim of a heavy fall in the special, Pierre will have to retire (dislocation of right shoulder). Good recovery Pierre, see you soon !

We are now back at Pierres Plates for a third passage, the sixth special of the rally. And there, surprise: Kevin Cheylan, the "young" ex-champion of the 125 4-stroke category of the 2015 French rally championship, who has been riding a "real" motorcycle since then and has shown us since the start of this 48th Beaujolais rally, which he knows how to use, gets the best scratch time in less than a minute (0’59.29), i.e. a tenth of a second faster than Bruno Schiltz (0’59.39).

Julien Toniutti and Laurent Filleton will also be under the minute and the fifth fastest time goes to promising Jeremy Barnoin (KTM 990 SMT) in 1’00.58.

For a special of nearly 2 kilometers, we approach 120 km / h average speed, it rolls really really fast ahead! The rest of the ranking concerns Benoît Nimis (Yamaha MT-10), Frederic Galtier (KTM 990 Supereduke), Sonia Barbot (KTM 690 Duke), etc..

End of the third big loop: we leave for the small one, the last 45 kilometers of this daytime stage.

At the Col de Saint-Bonnet, Bruno Schiltz sets the record straight and sets the best time in 3’04.20, the record time on this special since the start of the rally! Laurent Filleton follows him more than 4.5 seconds (3’08.75) ahead of Kevin Cheylan who confirms that he must now be reckoned with (3’14.05).

4-8 - Rallye du Beaujolais - Rallye du Beaujolais: Schiltz leading the French championship! - Beaujolais rally page 2: day stage

Let us also underline the fine performance of Tanguy Brebion, who finished in fourth position on his Husqvarna 701 Supermotard, first in the Rallye 2 Tecnoglobe category in 3’14.10. Nice performance also from Maxime Delorme at the controls of his Yamaha MT-09, 5th at 1.84 seconds from Tanguy.

The delays accumulated following a few crashes – mainly that of Pierre Reynaud – will force the organization to shorten this last lap by canceling the last day special. The pilots therefore return in a convoy to Blace to complete this last lap of the day..
