The Holding Trophy group (Bering, Segura, Cameron, STT, BLH, Bagster, etc.) took advantage of the third edition of the National Motorcycle and Scooter Days, this weekend in Montlhery (read our), to officially launch its vest autonomous airbag developed with the company API (Advanced Protection Industry).

Presented at the Intermot show in Cologne 2008 (read our), this electronic airbag – available in black or yellow – is worn over the pilot’s clothing and inflates completely in 80 milliseconds thanks to three sensors installed by a Bering technician on the two -wheels (see diagram opposite): one unit responsible for detecting shocks (1), another one responsible for detecting loss of control (2) and a final one which provides the interface between the motorcycle subsystem and the unit installed on the garment (3).

Using technologies proven in large series on the "curtain" airbags used in automobiles, this vest sets the bar very high in terms of protection: inflated by helium compressed to 600 bars, the Bering airbag protects the neck and chest. , the back, the abdomen, the coccyx and in addition embeds a CE approved back protector, reflective bands, as well as a card with useful information for first aid (see diagram below).

To demonstrate the validity of this biker protection tool, Bering had organized an impressive demonstration during which a stuntman on a scooter struck the front part of an automobile from the side: propelled over the hood, the reckless "guinea pig" got up. unharmed thanks to the airbag vest which remains inflated six seconds after deployment.

The first electronic autonomous airbag to be marketed in series (from September 2010 in France and early 2011 in the rest of Europe), the Bering inflatable vest also has the advantage of being able to be used on two different vehicles (previously equipped with different sensors), but also to be worn by the driver and his passenger on the same vehicle.

Capable of differentiating between shocks (70% of accidents according to Bering) and loss of control (20% of accidents), this "intelligent" and practical airbag (no physical connection with the two-wheeler) seems able to respond to ” one of the most vital protection needs of bikers and scooter riders: lesions that can lead to death are in fact mainly concentrated in the chest (abdomen, thorax and spine).

Lightweight and practical (it can be easily stored in a top case and does not require any particular operation to be put on or removed), the Bering airbag can be installed on any type of motorcycle or scooter and does not require any maintenance other than the replacement of the batteries supplying the various electronic boxes.

Bering announces a lifespan of 15 years for this device marketed at a price of 490 euros, which makes the brakes with the electronic airbag Dainese D-Air (read in particular), used only in competition for the moment.

A relatively low rate to which may be added "incentives (coverage in the event of an accident, reduction of the purchase price, etc.) envisaged by insurance companies", specifies the French equipment manufacturer.
