Dainese launches D-Air, a new generation of motorcycle airbags

Italy’s Dainese is preparing to market an electronically triggered motorcycle airbag, which could prove to be more reliable than theEggparka, only product currently available.

If the best protection for the rider is still the absence of a fall, certain safety accessories play a major role in the event of inappropriate contact with the ground.. In practice, the motorcycle airbag does not – yet? – part of the usual paraphernalia (helmet, gloves, leather), while there are already models like theEggparka of Japanese origin, which for 3,850 FF (586 euros) can avoid too violent shocks on the neck, collarbones, thorax, back, kidneys and coccyx. Inflating theEggparka, by means of a carbon dioxide cylinder, is triggered by a cable connecting the motorcycle to the rider in the event of ejection. The disadvantage is that in the event of non-triggering (cable too long or pilot ejected too close to the motorcycle), the chest will have to directly cushion the gas cartridge, which can cause a rib crush or pass the shock wave on viscera and lungs … This is why second generation motorcycle airbags, like the D-Air developed by the Israeli company Merhav AAP and which Dainese will market in the coming months, use electronic sensors to trigger inflation. The D-Air, Cordless, is in fact activated in 30 thousandths of a second by a computer capable of identifying emergency situations and pilot ejection in the impact phase. Another advantage is that it also offers better cervical protection. The D-Air should be marketed in France this summer, but its prohibitive price (around 6,000 FF) probably condemns it to feature prominently in museums and to remain an inaccessible gadget for most bikers…
