Displayed at 8,900 euros, the Z900 and the Street Triple S use very different arguments to coax bikers. However, is the match unbalanced? On the contrary, the Kawasaki and Triumph roadsters are fighting neck and neck in this battle of leaders. Test !

2017 is a pivotal year for motorcycles: compliance with the new Euro4 standard has forced the brands to review their entire range. Some machines little appreciated volumetric have gone by the wayside, while the bestsellers have been renewed in priority, more or less deeply.

Since mid-capacity roadsters are particularly popular with European bikers in general, French bikers in particular, the manufacturers have logically revised their model present in this juicy segment. At Triumph, we really went the extra mile…

This year as a reminder, three versions of the new Street Triple 765 – "bye bye" the 675 cc – land in the dealerships of the English brand. First to come out of the factories – Thai – of the British: the high-end model called RS.

This "super sport" model was presented to us last February, on the demanding Catalunya circuit as well as on its surrounding and whirling Barcelona roads … and just drying out! A hearty test program therefore, from which the Street Triple RS came out very brilliantly.

As beautiful and good as it is, the little English girl was not without its weak points: after its test, MNC mainly regretted that the 3-cylinder 765 cc continued to whistle – not as much as the 675 or the 800 certainly, but always too much -, that her wardrobe is not more shimmering, and that its price peaks at 11,600 €…

Impossible with such a price to compete with the new Japanese "maxi-mid-size" roadsters, all carefully placed under the bar of 9000 euros (reread our Comparo MNC Kawasaki Z900 Vs Suzuki GSX-S750 Vs Yamaha MT-09). No, this mission falls to the Street Triple S !

Arrived in Triumph dealerships last April (a month after the Street Triple RS and a month before the intermediate R model offered at € 10,200), the "Strroits" is aligned with the price of its Japanese rivals: it is currently displays at 8,900 € all round.

To do this, Hinckley made some savings on peripherals (brakes, suspensions, dashboard mainly) and mounted an engine a little less efficient than on the two sisters: 113 hp and 73 newton-meters for the S, against 118 hp and 77 Nm for the R, 125 hp (and 77 Nm too) for the RS.

Common to the three machines despite their different equipment: their weight, estimated at 166 kg dry. Those pesky Englishmen who never do anything like the rest of the world, don’t communicate the full weight of their motorcycles. However, the French registration document indicates a mass in service of 187 kg…

The Z900 to test the Street Triple S, "Watt else?"

However, the weight indicated on the registration document of the Z900 corresponds exactly to that announced by Kawasaki: 210 kg. Despite this difference of 23 kg and a – large! – difference of 183 cc in terms of displacement, MNC still selected the "Zed" for this new duel

To gauge the performance of this Street Triple S 2017, Site actually wanted to put it in – three – legs, the toughest and most homogeneous roadster of the moment. Le Journal moto du Net has therefore chosen the Z900, a new benchmark in the segment….

It is not MNC who places the Zed on a pedestal, but the French who "elected" it best maxi-mid-size roadster in the first half of 2017: the Kawasaki sold 1529 copies on our territory, against 1462 license plates for the MT-09 and 1005 for the GSX-S750…

However the Z900 intends to remain in power until the end of the year, then to remain at the head of sales (behind the MT-07, Z650 and Tmax at the "scratch" however) during a five-year term, at least. For the record, the domination of the Z750 in France lasted an entire seven-year term: from 2005 to 2011 !

Heavier than the Street by about 12%, as we have just seen, the Z900 takes advantage of its large 4-cylinder (only 5 cc less bulky than the engine of the first Z1000 …) to fill, on paper, its weight handicap: its maximum power of 125 hp is 11% greater than that of the Street S. So everywhere, the ball in the center ?

The Kawasaki is at the same time more bestial: unlike its English rival – and its two compatriots – the Japanese is devoid of electronic aids! No driving mode, no anti-skid: the pilot is the only master on board.

After all, the Zed like the Stritees are not intended for young sailors, let alone foams since they are not accessible to new licenses. Note also that Kawasaki has not renewed with the Z900 the "e version" model offered on the Z800, the Z650 fully ensuring its role of "school" motorcycle..

At Triumph, on the other hand, a Street Triple S "A2 license" will land next October, at the announced price of € 8,500. The dedicated variation of the 3-cylinder cubing 660 cc will not develop more than 95 horsepower, in order to be able to be limited to the regulatory 47.5 hp (or 35 kW).

But back to our confrontation of the day, a "duel at the top" since it pits the bestseller of Kawasaki (best selling "maxi-mid-size" in France) against that of Triumph (first roadster of "European" brand , hmm). Let’s take a closer look on the next page…
