All Duels - Head to head European: the new Monster challenges the Speed Triple! - Straight to the point: two hunters on the same land ...

Since the mid-90s, Ducati Monster and Triumph Speed Triple have brilliantly combined a strong visual identity with an engine as big as this ! A comparative test between the new 1100 rital and the last vintage of the English 3-legged was required…

Straight to the point: two hunters on the same land…

Sensational machines – even sensational machines – the Ducati 1100 Monster and the Triumph Speed Triple both cultivate this ability to thrill. Stocky and equipped with an engine that seems to want to come out of a chassis worthy of a Hypersport, these two motorcycles arouse the envy of many bikers – not to mention that of thugs … – who revel in advance of their faculties to give the banana to the first acceleration, to the slightest backlash of their exhaust and all these promises of bends swallowed drum beating !

When it comes time to take stock, it’s pushing an open door to repeat that the Triumph engine lends itself with joyful good will to this kind of exercise: flexible without being bland and powerful without showing itself to be temperamental, the three-legged is undoubtedly the best compromise between the extension of a 4-in-line and the potato of a bi !

This being the case, twin aficionados will have no remorse for the intoxication of the Monster 1100’s revs: much more frequent than before, the last big monster from Borgo Panigale has however lost none of its aura. and always delivers its share of sensations, which 16 years of commercial career have – fortunately – not sanitized !

Ultimately, our two machines hunt on the same lands but not with the same weapons: the Triumph is certainly more livable on a daily basis – apart from the dryness of its suspensions – thanks to its more "elastic" engine and the smoothness of its controls. However, its hoarse noise and its rigidity of the chassis constantly call for excess … For its part, the Ducati appears more comfortable – for the category – but its twin-cylinder requires more dexterity in town and undoubtedly pushes harder, but for less time..

And do not rely on practical aspects to decide between them: despite the redesign of its rear loop, being a passenger in a Speed - and a Monster – must remain an occasional experience … Finally, the two motorcycles do not pass. on the warnings and the fuel gauge: straight to the point, we tell you! Fortunately for her, the Ducati however has a coded key which can curb some bad intentions (read our box on the first page)…

The budget remains: the Ducati is traded at € 300 less than the Triumph (€ 11,200 against € 11,500) and was less greedy throughout our test (5.5 l per 100 km on average against 6.4 l for the Triumph, which however only benefited from a single measure of consumption thanks to the unforgettable reception to which it was a victim upon its arrival in Reims). Anyway, on motorcycles so passionate, is the question of price really essential? Nothing is less sure…
