All Tests - Test Moto Guzzi Stelvio 1200 8V: the beautiful evoluzione! - Small and big changes in 2011

In 2011 at Moto Guzzi, the Stelvio 1200 8V succeeded the Stelvio 1200 4V. Site had the opportunity to test the novelty as well as its version more adventurous than ever, the NTX, on the pretty roads of Tuscany. Test: avanti !

Small and big changes in 2011

A couple of hours after getting out of the new Norge (read our), or time to enjoy a hearty Italian lunch, Site is relaunching the assault on the superb Tuscan roads on the handlebars of the 2011 version of the road trail Moto Guzzi: the Stelvio 1200 8V…

Contrary to what its name might suggest, the replacement for the Stelvio 1200 4V does not have twice as many valves as the previous one … Because from its launch in 2008, the Stelvio benefited from the "quattrovalvole" version of the twin cylinder by Mandello del Lario !

But in 2011, the new Moto Guzzi nevertheless benefits from a revised engine: "in addition to a new camshaft profile, it incorporates a new exhaust line and above all a new ignition and injection system which manages each cylinder separately thanks to two lambda probes, in order to optimize their supply , improve throttle response and minimize fuel consumption", revealed to us the day before our test the managers of the brand.

"The settings are a little more aggressive than on the Norge and the maximum values are slightly higher compared to the old model", they continued, not hesitating to contradict the press release issued at the last EICMA trade fair in Milan … which reported a slight loss of performance at high speed but a resurgence of vigor at low and mid-range. diet (read) !

Let it be said: the final maximum values of the 1151 cc twin-cylinder fitted to the very latest Stelvio are therefore a power of 105 horsepower obtained at 7,250 rpm, and a maximum torque of 113 Nm reached at 5,800 rpm . Air-cooled but also oil-cooled, the Stelvio 8V engine inherits a slightly larger radiator.

Finally, the Italians equipped their maxi trail with an ATC traction control system "preventing slips". Its independence vis-à-vis the ABS system and its sensors allows it to appear on all versions (with or without ABS therefore) of the new Stelvio 8V and its sister NTX.

At the same time, the motorcycle underwent a significant (r) evolution in terms of the tank: limited to 18 liters on the 2008-2010 model, its capacity rose to an appreciable 32 liters in 2011. "Autonomy thus reaches 440 km, even at high speed.", assure us the Moto Guzzi engineers.

Aesthetically, however, the beautiful Italian has not changed much: it makes you wonder where the manufacturer went to get the additional 14 liters! By digging a little, however, we realize that the storage compartment has disappeared and that the saddle is raised by 20 mm to reach 820 mm (adjustable to 840 for adults).

Likewise, you have to pay some attention to the Stelvio 8V – or be familiar with contemporary Guzzi – to notice the remodeling of the front part: the screen and its support differ slightly from the old elements, but the boil (a) typical of the machine is retained.

On the practical side, if heavy riders will regret the disappearance of the storage compartment, they will gladly welcome the 12V socket – not 12 valves, 12 Volts! – adjacent to the dashboard. Under the saddle, a second plug can even charge other electrical equipment that can be conscientiously rolled up in the rain pants..

In terms of the chassis, three main changes are made to the Stelvio: new suspension settings, new aluminum alloy rims (on the 8V but not on the NTX) and a rear tire of 150 / 70-17 (against 180 / 55-17 previously). The front tire keeps the dimensions 110 / 80-17.

Beautiful, the rims of the 8V are also equipped with angled valves very practical to apply pressure. That is the demand of the people ? Bread and spoke rims? Never mind: the latter remain on the program of the ultimate version of this Italian anti-GS – there you have it, the term has been dropped … -, the Stelvio 1200 NTX.

Adorned with its mat black "Lava" dress (black, white or yellow "Terre de Sienne" on the standard 8V), the Stelvio NTX offers a hell of a backpacker look: spoke rims signed Alpina, but also an impressive engine spoiler all aluminum, a crankcase protector, cylinder protection, additional headlights, hand guards and suitcases, all of this as standard: heavy riders will get their money’s worth !

In this regard, the prices of the Stelvio range from € 13,590 for the standard without ABS (count € 800 more) to € 15,690 for the NTX ABS (without ABS, withdraw € 700). Either prices aligned or slightly lower than those charged by the competition: the base BMW R 1200 GS appears at € 14,250, the standard Ducati Multistrada at € 14,990, the KTM Adventure at € 13,150 and the Yamaha Super Tenere at € 13,990 (read in particular our).

But on the road, what is the new Moto Guzzi worth? To discover it, follow us on the next page … and under the radiant sun of the surroundings of Firenze !
