Engine

Borrowed from the, the 1215 cc three-cylinder only underwent a few modifications before joining the chassis of the new Trophy: the exhaust and airbox were revised, while the sixth gear pulled longer. And that’s it!

Logically, we find very similar power and torque values, if not identical: 134 hp at 8900 rpm and 120 Nm at 6450 rpm for the road against 137 hp at 7000 rpm and 121 Nm at 6400 rpm for the trail-GT. On the other hand, the three-cylinder is a little more used on the Trophy since it has to tow an additional 42 kg: 259 kg all full for the Tiger Explorer, 301 kg for the Trophy 1200 SE (about 4 kg less on the Trophy " normal ").

Equipped with a robust 950 W alternator, this all new engine has almost no common part with the current 1050cc. It adopts an oil-water exchanger which allows the temperature of the lubricant to be lowered, a system discovered on the Tiger Explorer which improves the engine’s energy efficiency – and therefore the control of its pollutant emissions – but also its reliability..

Direct consequence: the service intervals of the Trophy pass to 16,000 km, as on the 2.3 liters of the Rocket III. The interval between each "big" overhaul is increased to 32,000 km: good for the peace of mind of the driver and … his wallet !

Modern, this three-cylinder with dimensions of 85 mm of bore and 71.4 mm of stroke also embeds an electronic accelerator of the type "Ride-by-Wire" and transmits its power to the rear tire of 190 via an acatene transmission by shaft and gimbals.

Cycle part

On the cycle side, the Trophy 1200 is totally different from the Explorer: its perimeter-type aluminum frame is unique and weighs only 11.3 kg. A featherweight which would ensure the title of chassis the "lighter in its class", assure the British engineers.

Generously sized, this frame is connected to an inverted fork 43 mm in diameter adjustable in rebound and to a mono-shock absorber mounted on a rod adjustable in preload and rebound. Designed to be stable in all circumstances, the Trophy 1200 displays geometric values ​​accordingly: 1542 mm of wheelbase, 27 ° of caster angle and 119 mm of caster.

Braking is provided by two 320mm floating discs clamped by four-piston axially mounted calipers at the front and a single 282mm disc bitten by a two-piston caliper at the rear. A tailor-made device to stop the full 301 kg of the SE model and the 297 kg (approximately) of the standard Trophy. Judiciously balanced, the Englishwoman displays 51.6% of this considerable mass on the front.

In good top-of-the-range road, the Triumph carries an ABS and a progressive “rear-front” coupling system: the action on the right pedal is automatically transmitted to the front calipers. Modern, this partial coupling takes place intelligently.

Thus, when the rear brake is actuated lightly (as during a small correction of traj ‘in curve), the front is not involved. On the other hand, as soon as the rear is requested with more insistence, the force is proportionally transmitted back to the front four-piston calipers..

The original 120/70/17 and 190/55/17 rims are fitted with Pirelli Angel ST tires, but the Metzeler Roadtec Z8 Interact and Dunlop Sportmax Roadsmart II options are also approved by the manufacturer..

Electronics and piloting aids

Like the Explorer, the new Trophy 1200 embeds a "Ride-By-Wire" electronic accelerator with two processors for optimum throttle control according to various parameters collected by the ECU, the "electronic brain" of the device..

Discovered for the first time on the Yamaha R6, this system analyzes in particular the engine speed, the gear engaged, the position of the handle, the pressure and the temperature of the air at the intake. Depending on the values ​​collected, it acts on the gas butterflies that it is able to open or close in 75 milliseconds !

Allowing more precise gas management – especially at low and very low speeds – and a significant reduction in pollutant emissions, this electronic accelerator above all facilitates the use of anti-slip, standard on the Trophy..

Baptized Triumph Traction Control and informed by the ABS sensors, this TTC intervenes on the injection via the ride-by-wire when it detects a difference in speed of rotation between the front and the rear, then on the ignition when the difference becomes too important.

But unlike the Explorer; its action cannot be configured on the Trophy: either it is in action (On), or it is deactivated (Off). To disengage it, all you have to do is enter the "TTC" menu of the on-board computer by pressing the "i" button on the left stalk for a few seconds. This menu also allows you to set the time or the counter unit of measurement (miles or kilometers)..

The Trophy 1200 also receives a "cruise control" as standard. To activate this cruise control, all you have to do is press the round button located at the bottom of the right stalk, then keep the "Set / -" button pressed for 0.5 sec once the bike has stabilized at the desired speed..

The pilot then has the possibility of increasing or reducing the speed by pressing the "Set / +" and "Set / -" keys. For safety, the system is deactivated as soon as you touch the brakes or the clutch.

Finally, the SE version of the Trophy 1200 is equipped with electronically controlled suspensions as on many BMWs or certain Ducati (Multistrada 1200 and 1199 Panigale). Developed with WP and named Triumph Electronic Suspension (TES), the system first of all allows you to choose between "Sport", "Normal" or "Comfort" calibration: the intervention is then only exerted on the relaxation of the front and rear suspensions..

Then, depending on whether "Solo", "Solo loaded" or "Duo" mode is selected, the TES acts on the preload of the rear shock absorber. All for the benefit of comfort and safety, since suspensions poorly tuned to the load and the presence of a passenger can be a source of pronounced movements during heavy pressure (braking, acceleration, impromptu change of course, etc.). Especially on a motorcycle as heavy as the Trophy 1200 !

Here again, the adjustment of these parameters is carried out by pressing the "i" button for a few seconds, then by entering the menus dedicated to TES. The choice between the different functions is made with the arrows on the left stalk.
