Czech Republic GP - Quartararo again leader during post-race tests in Brno -

Fabio Quartararo, the fastest driver in the dry during the Czech Republic GP, confirms his speed with the best time in official tests after the race. The French debutant precedes the Yamaha of Viñales and Morbidelli and the Suzuki of Rins.

MotoGP riders stayed an extra day in Brno to conduct official tests in the wake of the Czech Republic GP, for the record won by Marc Marquez ahead of Andrea Dovizioso and Jack Miller after a postponement of the start due to the rain.

Each year, these tests are of considerable importance insofar as manufacturers traditionally introduce their evolutions for the next season, while validating the last major modifications for the current year. Yamaha was testing its 2020 engine, for example, as well as a redesigned fork crown and a narrower saddle.

Honda had made three RCVs available to Marquez and Crutchlow, with different variants of carbon reinforced chassis. The same goes for Suzuki and Aprilia, which gradually "carbonize" the frames of their respective GSX-RR and RS-GP. Ducati for its part mainly focused on adjustments and a new swingarm..

At KTM, Miguel Oliveira drove the latest factory version of the RC16 while Pol Espargaro focused on electronics, WP suspensions and chassis settings released by test driver Dani Pedrosa.

Hyper-active quartararo, Zarco is saving for Austria…

Johann Zarco, the least active driver of this day, for his part preferred to keep his energy for the Australian GP next Sunday and completed only 31 laps … against 78 for his compatriot Fabio Quartararo! Remember that the KTM rider finished the race in 14th place after a completely failed start from his brilliant 3rd place in the rain..

This engagement on the Quartararo track is rewarded by the best time of these tests in 1’55.616, signed in the 69th passage of the Yamaha-SRT rider. Fabio thus confirms his speed expressed in the dry Friday, when he had dominated the first day of free practice in 1’55.802. Chrono not beaten then because of the changing conditions !

The young French beginner has also tested the fork with carbon sheaths of the official M1s, obviously with success. The n ° 20 is ahead of Maverick Viñales, who briefly tested the new Yamaha engine: remember that the Spaniard, very disappointed with his 10th place in Brno, had said he wanted to stay focused on the current season and not be interested in the M1 2020…

"I wanted to focus on improving my bike for Austria, so I only did a few laps (with the 2020 bike, editor’s note)", confirms the Spanish rider. "It worked well, I did some good laps so we’ll see in the next test".

Rossi not particularly enthusiastic about the new engine

His teammate Valentino Rossi, 6th in these tests, for his part extensively tested the new 4-cylinder as well as the new aerodynamic appendages. The Doctor said he was delighted to have new parts to gauge – "last year they only brought one fender", he laughs! -, but is reserved on the power gain claimed…

"There isn’t much of a difference," he laments, referring to the 2020 prototype. (…) "There is still a lot to do, at all levels. The engine is not much more. fast, but this is only the first prototype: we expect something more, because we know this is only the first evaluation. We will have something else after Silverstone ".

Big fall by Joan Mir

Franco Morbidelli, Alex Rins and Cal Crutchlow completed the Top 5 of this day marked by the return of the showers halfway through and the big fall of Joan Mir. The Suzuki rider – dragged to the mat by Morbidelli on Sunday – crashed into the first corner at very high speed, less than an hour before the end of the test.

His GSX-RR slipped past the inflatables, causing the red flag to pop out as the – seriously shaken – pilot was driven to hospital with suspected pulmonary trauma. The news is reassuring, however, after a night of sightings as Mir is reportedly not suffering any serious injuries. Phew !

Marc Marquez signs for his part the 8th fastest time in these official tests, focused on the development of the RCV 2020. The defending champion – and wide leader of the championship with 63 pts ahead of Dovizioso! – completed 70 laps with different versions of his bike.

MotoGP riders will now take a very short breath before heading to the Red Bull Ring, where the 2019 Austrian GP will take place this weekend, the eleventh round of the 2019 World Championship..
