Could the month of May 2012 on the motorcycle market in France be qualified as "Mensis Horribilis"? Looking at the raw data, undoubtedly: 4,734 units are missing from the month of May 2011, representing a colossal drop of -21.8% !

Since the start of the year, the 125 cc have been the hardest hit. In May, the drop in their sales reached a worrying -32.9% (6,030 immates in May 2012 against 8,990 last year over the same period). Since January 1, the 125 market has lost nearly a quarter of its volume (-23.2%).

The majority of the main players see their scores crumble in a worrying way and only Peugeot brakes a little less hard than its little comrades (-16.3%) while only KTM continues to be an exception to the rule (+ 44.6% ).

In large-displacement vehicles, after a positive winter, the fall in spring is confirmed: 10,964 motorcycles and maxiscooters were registered against 12,738 in May 2011, a decline of -13.9%. Combined with the five laws, the big cubes recorded a decline of -4.6%.

As is often the case in this sector which is more heterogeneous than that of the 125s (mainly "utility"), the scores of the brands are more contrasted: while Kawasaki and Suzuki plunge and BMW and Triumph fall, Yamaha resists, Honda and Ducati improve, and KTM and Aprilia make even more progress !

But Site readers – who, as everyone knows, are a little more fortunate than others – find that by consulting our archives, it appears that the last month was not that dark and that it ‘is above all the comparison with a solid month of May 2011 which "crashes" the statistics (read our)…

As indicated by the title of our report last year, the month of May 2011 was not idle: let us recall that last year, May 1 and 8 fell on Sundays, to the chagrin of schoolchildren and children. their teachers but to the delight of dealers !

Conversely, the month of May 2012 offered two big bridges synonymous with long weekends spent in the countryside or on the sofa in front of the TV – depending on means or motivation – rather than in "more or less" open concessions, I don’t know, look on the internet, nah go ahead I’m getting drunk I’m staying at home…

Likewise, Ascension Thursday and Whit Monday "postponed" to June 2011 were celebrated this year in May. Also the number of working days between May 2011 and May 2012 went from 22 to only 19 … Enough to erase two thirds of the shortfall (-14%) !

Furthermore, it should be noted that unlike last year, the weather certainly did not support sales of motorized two-wheelers. Bright in 2011, May was not particularly lively in 2012. And the rain that fell in April did not boost orders….

Finally on May 6, 2012 the French were called to the polls for the second round of the presidential election. Although the impact of this event on sales of motorcycles and scooters is not clearly defined (the managers of the manufacturers themselves do not know), one can suspect a decrease in the attention of bikers to their passion, resulting in a possible decrease in the number of acquisitions.
