Market reports - Motorcycle market: decrease in registrations in 2010 - Decrease in registrations in 2010

Motorcycle registrations in France fell by -7.2% this year. Even by adding up MP3 LT sales, the 200,000 units mark has not been crossed … The market therefore returns to its 2005 level.. Figures, graphs and complete balance sheet.

Decrease in registrations in 2010

It was a very gray, too cold and far too snowy month of December that ended 2010. Admittedly, the 125 cc ended their year with an unexpected + 0.9% (thank you Peugeot and its Tweet), but the large cubes see their sales slip by -20.9%.

Over the year as a whole – which had two more working days than 2009 and roughly the same number of "concession opening days" – the two sectors finally recorded respective decreases of -7.3 and – 7.1% … not famous.

Thus, for the first time in five years, the French motorcycle market (motorcycles and scooters over 50 cc) is below the mark of 200,000 annual registrations. Indeed in 2010, 185,609 new motorcycles and scooters found buyers in our country.

Already last year, the number of registrations amounted to just 200,017 (read). But the MP3 LT – those famous Piaggio "tricycles" not counted among motorcycles – had made it possible to raise the score to 213,956 units, considerably limiting the fall of the motorcycle and scooter market: around 10% compared to the beautiful year 2008, against -15.9% for motorcycles alone (read).

185,609 registrations (-7.2%)

Once again this year, the MP3 LT (versions 250, 300, 400 and Hybrid 300) achieved excellent results: 11,479 registrations in all. However, these additional sales are not enough for the market to reach the "two hundred thousand" mark. Worse, the large Italian three-wheelers amplify the decline in sales of motorcycles and scooters of "more than 50 cc" in France: with them, the general decline goes from -7.2% to -7.9% !

Strikes, gasoline shortages and snowfall added to the ambient austerity and did not facilitate the task of manufacturers and their networks. Like last year, professionals have seen ups and downs results, and significantly lower compared to the previous year.

Only twice, the 125 cc beat their scores in 2009: in July and December … The large cubes on their side grazed the surface in April, then in July and August, but finally remained below the water all this year 2010.

We also note that the "+ 125 cc" sector has recorded its worst performance since Site examined the motorcycle market figures: 99,559 immats in 2010, that is 5,014 less than in 2004 (score the lowest since 2003) … and 21,549 units less than in 2007 (absolute record with 121,108 immats), i.e. one month of activity during the summer season !

Of course, not all brands are housed in the same boat! Japanese carmakers in general – they accounted for just one in two sales in 2010! -, and Suzuki in particular, are hit hard.

Japanese people suffer…

All cylinders combined, the Yellow of Hamamatsu saw their registrations fall by -20.8%. Their market share (11.5% in 2009) is slipping this year below 10%. The lack of new products in 2010 was paid for in cash at Suz ‘…

Still number one in France, Yamaha also suffered a significant drop in sales: -10.8% compared to 2009. Despite their 35,779 registrations (which is still 10,000 more immates than Honda, 2nd in the French ranking) , the Blues are therefore back under 20% of PDM.

For a bit, the Tokyo Reds could congratulate themselves on their 2010 year in France: although their sales decreased by -3.5% compared to last year, they are the only Japanese to grab market share. Their PCX 125, a scooter that is both "low cost" and "high tech", is undoubtedly the good surprise of the year … and an example to follow ?

Kawasaki for its part let slip 1206 sales between 2009 and 2010 (-7.4%) and barely manages to retain its market share: eight motorcycles out of a hundred sold in France this year came from Akashi. Its roadsters are still very popular with the French, but the rest of the range – the new small 125s included – remain too far behind to allow the Greens to compete with their compatriots..

Europeans are pushing !

Piaggio – and Vespa! – remains in 5th place with 10,827 registered scooters, ie a PDM of just over 5.8%. Remember that the MP3 LT is missing: with them, the Italians could claim 3rd place in the general classification … and 1st in the "125 and equivalent B License" sector. !

Behind, the Americans are back in line: 6th in 2009, they find "their" 8th place behind BMW and Peugeot, both very fit. Indeed, the Germans emerge at + 17.3% while the French sign a superb + 14%. The new R1200s and the S1000RR in particular had a great year !

After an exceptional 2009 financial year, Triumph is only – very – slightly throttling (-5%, ie a little less than 6000 immats in 2010) and its Street Triple and Speed Triple are still gaining places in the French "charts"! The English are still ahead of two Taiwanese: Sym (-18.5%) is relayed by Kymco (+ 9.5%) in 10th place in the ranking.

But we could well see the same type of handover between KTM and Ducati next year. The Italians in Bologna are only 510 lengths behind the Austrians in Mattighofen (against 1299 last year)! Monster 696 and 796 sell better than orange 690 and 990…

Now fourteenth, MBK still lost a few tenths of the pie in 2010 (1.81% of PDM in 2010). Daelim and Aprilia for their part respectively catch their breath (+ 0.7%) and the hair of the beast (+ 7.5%, thanks to the RSV4 R especially), and are imitated by Gilera (+ 2.3%) and Gas Gas (+ 10.1%).

Sky Team and Jonway, on the contrary, ended up winning: the extraordinary climbs of 2008 and 2009 were over, Sky Team – there are many competitors for its Dax! – and Jonway – the Japanese and French are also getting into cheap scooters! – end a year 2010 in the red … Finally, in the "purple" at MNC !
