Small scooters against ‘real’ motorcycles: the trend is reversed

Market reports - Small scooters against '' real '' motorcycles: the trend is reversed - Small scooters against '' real '' motorcycles

The French motorcycle market recorded a slight drop in sales over the first six months of 2011 with -1.9% compared to the first half of 2010. But 125 cc and large cubes are not in the same boat…. Site takes stock.

Small scooters vs. ‘real’ motorcycles

The first half of 2011 has just ended in a difficult month of June for motorcycle and scooter professionals: the 19,008 motorcycles registered last month correspond to a drop of -21.4% in sales per report to June 2010 (read our).

However, it is necessary to put things into perspective: in addition to two working days less (20 days against 22 in June 2010, therefore -9%), the month of June 2011 and the previous ones experienced exceptional weather which certainly attracted the French to the concessions. a little earlier this year. According to Meteo France, spring 2011 was even "the hottest since the start of the 20th century and the driest in the last 50 years".

"These weak rains associated with the high temperatures caused an extremely early drying of the surface soils on almost the whole country."Says the French organization. Bad news for farmers, certainly, but excellent for fans of two-wheelers. !

The situation of the motorcycle and scooter market in France at the end of this first semester is therefore far from being catastrophic since since January 1, 2011, 102,240 motorcycles have been registered in France, that is to say 1999 less than in the first semester of 2010.

Even taking into account the additional working day in 2011 (126 against 125 in the first half of 2010), this decrease of -1.9% therefore appears minimal given the context – political, this time – particularly unfavorable to the practice of two-wheelers. in France…

By distinguishing between sales of 125 cc and those of larger displacements, however, radically opposite trends can be observed: -12.3% for vehicles subjected to the new 7-hour training against + 5.7% for those subjected, for still at less two years, to the bridle of the "horseless"…

While the large cube sector – always more seasonal – returned to its level of the first half of 2009, that of the 125 continued its descent that began during the same period. But beyond this distinction between displacement, it also seems that motorcycles are taking their revenge on scooters…

The observation of the classification of manufacturers by sales of motorcycles "all cylinders included" – mopeds or "50 cc" are de facto discarded – allows to support this hypothesis.

French buyers fell in love in spring 2011 more for "real" motorcycles – as Europeans and Americans know how to do, in particular – rather than scooters "made in Japan" (or Thailand ?!), Italy, Taiwan, France or China.

We note that behind the four Japanese (52.42% of market share), BMW – which will soon offer scooters … – has made short work of Piaggio! Harley-Davidson is also in front of the Italian but should probably come back behind this fall. The Americans could however keep their advantage over Peugeot, 9th behind Triumph.

Likewise, KTM jumped to 10th place, overtaking Kymco, Sym … and Ducati! The significant reduction in tariffs granted by the Austrian and the arrival of the 125 Duke proved to be fruitful. Moto Guzzi takes advantage of a salvo of updates to its models to integrate the Top 20, at the same time ejecting Jonway.

The second Chinese, Sky Team, is dominated by another brand of the Piaggio group: Gilera. A striking illustration of the French taste for Premium products and brands at the expense of low-cost. At this level too, the trend is reversed…

Before analyzing in detail the sales of 125 and large engines in France this first half, note that the MP3s (LT and Yourban mainly) see their sales stabilize just below the 5500 registrations. Taking into account its tricycles – direct competitors of two-wheelers because they are accessible to "A licenses" – Piaggio would jump on the podium with nearly 10,500 registrations..
